The United States Federal Government has resolved the passport production crisis, and three missions have resumed passport services. A public notice was posted in the Nigerian embassy in Washington DC, informing all passport applicants who were scheduled for biometrics from Monday, November 13 to Thursday, November 16, to come to the embassy on any of the days from Monday, November 20 to Wednesday, November 22, 2023. The rescheduling was due to the internet outage experienced at the embassy, and the embassy regrets any inconvenience it might have caused.

Confirming this development, a source in the embassy said in New York on Sunday that the problem was resolved over the weekend.

“The system is back over the weekend. The experts worked tirelessly to resolve it and we are back. We fixed it yesterday (Saturday) and tested it. The system is back and all the centres are fine, both New York and Atlanta. The server in DC is collected to Atlanta and New York so whatever happens to our server affects other missions.’’

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the problem was internet-related and not a server issue, noting that since the server was connected to the embassy internet, anything that happened to the internet disconnects the other centres too.

According to the source, the experts in Nigeria worked with local ICT experts in the embassy and they were able to fix it.

The country’s three missions in the U.S. are the Consulates-General of Nigeria in New York and Atlanta, and the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington DC.

The embassy in Washington DC is the only passport production centre in the U.S., while the consulates take biometrics in their missions and take the same to Washington DC for passport production.

The Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians and its 20 partner organisations in New York had earlier appealed to the Federal Government to provide passport production machines for the missions in Atlanta and New York.

“The New York consulate has jurisdiction over the highest number of states and accepts the largest number of applicants from across the United States. It boggles the mind to understand why two passport printing machines are located in Washington with none in New York and in Atlanta,’’ the associations noted in a statement.

The New York Jurisdiction comprises 20 states of Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Nebraska, Ohio and North Dakota.

Others are South Dakota, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Vermont and Pennsylvania.

Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has confirmed that some of his cats were killed during a midnight raid conducted by the Department of State Services (DSS) on his residence in July 2021....Click Here To Continue Reading>>

Speaking in an interview with The Punch, Igboho, who keeps cats as pets, stated that the DSS officers indiscriminately fired bullets during the raid, leading to the death of several cats. He denied the rumours that he transformed into a cat to escape capture.

While acknowledging earlier reports alleging that the DSS and soldiers brought three herbalists, killed five cats, and took one away, believing Igboho had transformed, he clarified that the cats were simply caught in the crossfire of the raid.

“It’s true that some cats were killed during the attack,” Igboho explained. “The DSS just kept firing bullets everywhere. I had many cats as pets, and any movement attracted their gunfire.”

He added, “Their mission was clear: either kill me or arrest me and take me to some unknown location. But God is greater than anyone, including the former president. My God and providence put them to shame with that illegal raid. They failed to achieve what they came for. I didn’t turn into a cat to escape.”

This revelation comes just days after the ECOWAS Court of Justice in Abuja ordered the Benin Republic government to pay Igboho a sum of 20 million CFA as compensation for the raid and his illegal detention. Igboho recently regained his freedom in Benin and has since reunited with his family in Germany.

On Wednesday, the President of Benin Republic, Patrice Talon, visited Nigerian President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja. The two leaders discussed ways to improve trade relations between their countries.

In a statement released by presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu acknowledged the lack of cooperation between Nigeria and Benin Republic, which he said had been hindering mutual development. He emphasized the importance of economic synergy between the two nations for West African economic prosperity.

Tinubu referred to Nigeria and Benin Republic as “conjoined twins held together at the hip” and called for common economic principles and priorities. He welcomed the economic programme being developed through inter-ministerial collaboration and pledged support for private sector interests to facilitate prosperity in both countries.

President Talon sought President Tinubu’s support on improving trade relations between their countries ahead of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Summit. He emphasized the importance of free movement of people and goods between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

Talon also highlighted the need for a revised investment programme that factors in all aspects of the Nigerian economy. He proposed the establishment of an inter-ministerial technical committee to prepare a draft document for their legislatures. Talon expressed readiness to sign an executive order to appoint members of the council to advance mutually beneficial cooperation across sectors.

The two leaders also discussed the issue of smuggling and coordination efforts to ensure the protection of each other’s interests as their economies integrate.
