Isaiah Collier: From Top Mock Draft to Lottery Disappointment

Rare are the players – excluding injuries or extra-sporting circumstances – to clock a time during a season at the top of mock drafts to finally not even remain among the players selected for the “lottery”. However, this is the case of Isaiah Collier, a player who is difficult to leave indifferent, for good or bad. Post 1 fast and powerful, he can tear a defense to pieces on a good evening with his incessant activity towards the circle. But also being terribly frustrating, on both sides of the field. Collier was also not helped by the context of a USC team – where he rubbed shoulders with Bronny James – which was very disappointing this season, and which performed much better with its leader on the floor than without. An NBA context with more space and better teammates could be greatly beneficial to him.

Point fort

– Speed. Isaiah Collier may not have won the running clinics at the Draft Combine. In visual impression, however, he is the fastest player whether on a counter-attack in a pure sprint, or with the ball in hand to outflank his defender on half-court. Swift, the Trojan has a devastating first step and impressive foot speed to accelerate. No surprise to see him among the very best in the NCAA in transition, or in points scored in the paint per game (99th and 98th percentile respectively).

Weak points

– IQ at creation. Collier is one of the rare players in this Draft who can also create regularly for others, with very good passing quality, both after the screen and to find the shooters on the opposite side. But its “particle accelerator” side sometimes turns into a “headless chicken”, with lost balls in spades (3.3 per match, six to 5 lost balls or more). The American sometimes looks too much for a spectacular gesture or plays at a tempo so much higher than the world around him that he sees himself whistled for numerous passages or sends his passes at the wrong time to his teammates.

– Outside shooting. To become a real danger, Isaiah Collier would do well to equip himself with at least a decent three-point shot to prevent defenses from systematically waiting for him in the circle attack. At 33.8% by far, the room for improvement is there, especially since he will not be able to gain the upper hand physically and athletically in the NBA as much as in the NCAA or in high school. His style as a small athletic tank in the NCAA suggests a player in the register of a Jaden Iveyand Russell Westbrook early career without the ability to be above the circle, or Ty Lawson.

Prognosis

Around 20th placewhich could turn out to be a magnificent steal if Collier manages to put a little control into his game, and effort in defense.

Playful and with fast legs: Carlos Alcaraz thrilled the crowd on Centre Court when he reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon – but then found himself in danger at times. The 21-year-old defending champion was the more complete professional in the almost three-hour duel with the aggressive Frenchman Ugo Humbert and won 6:3, 6:4, 1:6, 7:5.

A loss of tension in the third set cost Alcaraz an even quicker win, but Humbert then played well and sensed his chance of a surprise. After that, however, the Spaniard improved again and made it to the quarter-finals. There he will face Tommy Paul (USA) or Roberto Bautista Agut (ESP).

The world number one Jannik Sinner stopped the winning streak of American tennis pro Ben Shelton at Wimbledon. The 22-year-old Italian won in the round of 16 with 6:2, 6:4, 7:6 (11:9). In the fight for a place in the round of the best four, Sinner will face former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev from Russia or Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

The Boston Celtics ownership seems to have decided to sell the franchise: the team’s valuation is truly impressive.

In this 2024 the NBA has painted itself in white and green the title victory by a historic franchise like the Boston Celtics. Victory for Frenchman Anthony Turgis in the 9th stage

Third French victory in the 2024 Grande Boucle. Anthony Turgis won the ninth stage of the Tour de France on Sunday, a 199-kilometre loop around Troyes (Aube). At the end of a crazy stage, Slovenian Tadej Pogacar retains the yellow jersey of leader in the general classification, ahead of Belgian Evenpoel and Dane Vingegaard.

And a third victory for France. Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies) won the ninth stage of the Tour de France 2024, that of the white paths, Sunday July 9, in Troyes (Aube).

Tadej Pogacar remains in yellow at the end of a completely crazy stage marked by numerous attacks and several “explanations” between favorites.

It was in a sprint that Turgis beat his breakaway companions to beat the Briton Tom Pidcock and the Canadian Derek Gee and secure the greatest victory of his career.

“It’s incredible, it’s been a long time since I won. I’ve been thinking about a big victory for years,” he exulted, very moved.

A specialist in the classics, the 30-year-old from the Paris region, who comes from a family of cyclists, had already taken second place in Milan-San Remo. He brings his TotalEnergies team its first victory in the Grande Boucle since that of Lilian Calmejane in 2017.

This stage concludes, before the rest day on Monday, a great first week with also the record of victories of the Briton Mark Cavendish (Astana) (35 victory on the Tour) and the first of the Eritrean Biniam Girmay, as well as already some great battles for the yellow jersey.

After the Troyes stage, a total concentration of cycling, the general classification remains unchanged, with the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) maintaining a 33-second lead over the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Steps), 1:15 over the Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Visma) and 1:36 over Primoz Roglic (Red Bull).

But the main favourites fought like rarely on the plain, like Pogacar who attacked twice in the last 22 kilometres without however managing to take off.

Evenepoel launched a very daring attack 70 km from the finish line, followed only by Pogacar and Vingegaard.

In a rare image on the Tour, the three men, isolated from the rest of the peloton, quickly returned to the breakaway before getting back up, cooled by the prospect of being cut off from their teammates on the dangerous wine-growing paths of the Aube, riddled with traps.

The breakaway, made up of strong riders, was then able to gain ground and in the end it was Anthony Turgis who proved to be the strongest.
