UEFA Euro 2024: ‘Joker’ Csoboth saves Hungary against Scotland

Both teams started cautiously and did not want to risk too much right from the start. The Scots tried to keep the ball in their own ranks, while the Hungarians waited for counterattacks. This was evident in the seventh minute when Dominik Szoboszlai headed a free kick cross from Andy Robertson out of the danger zone and the Hungarians then started a counterattack after a cross from Anthony Ralston into the penalty area.

This led to the first shot on goal in the match: Bendeguz Bolla wanted to surprise Scotland’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn with a long-range shot, but the 28-year-old was able to parry the ball that bounced up just in front of him (8th minute). Scotland had no top chances, but significantly more possession in the first 15 minutes with 75 percent of the ball.

First shot on goal by Bolla (8th)

The Hungarians had the first shot on goal in the match: Bendeguz Bolla was stopped by Scotland’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn (8′).

Early yellow cards for Hungary

However, the Scots were unable to capitalise on this either from the game or from standard situations. A free kick on the right side of the Hungarian penalty area by Robertson was again cleared by Szoboszlai – this time with his foot (22′). The fact that Hungary was struggling to keep up with the Scots’ game was reflected early on with yellow cards for Callum Styles (18′) and Willi Orban (26′), each for John McGinn.

After a foul on Styles by Che Adams on the other side, Szoboszlai took a free kick from a promising position, which Scott McKenna headed for a corner (32′). After that, the Hungarians became a little more courageous. Roland Sallai tried a long-range shot from outside the penalty area, which went well over the goal (35′).

Orban heads the ball onto the crossbar

Hungary was now much closer to scoring the first goal than the Scots. From a free kick from around 25 meters, Szoboszlai surprised everyone by chipping the ball into the left corner of the box instead of going straight for it. But Orban hit the crossbar with his header (41′). Shortly before half-time, Hungary’s Andras Schäfer also received a yellow card from Argentinian referee Facundo Tello for a foul with an outstretched leg on Jack Hendry. After a long-range shot from Szoboszlai went way over the bar, the referee blew the whistle for half-time.

Orban heads the ball onto the crossbar after a free kick (41.)

With a free kick from 25 meters, the Scots expected a direct attempt from Dominik Szoboszlai, but he surprised with a lob to the left corner of the box, where Willi Orban ran in and headed the ball onto the crossbar (41′).

The Hungarians also carried their momentum into the second half. Sallai’s deflected shot was saved by goalkeeper Gunn (49′). The Scots then almost gave the Hungarians a gift. Ralston let through a poorly executed pass from Szoboszlai on the left. Sallai gratefully accepted the mistake and shot, but Hendry threw himself into his shot (56′). Hungary’s complaints for a penalty for handball were ignored by the referee.

Serious collision

Next chances for Hungary: After a corner kick taken by Szoboszlai into the back area, Bolla crossed high into the box, Dardei’s header went over the goal (64th). When Szoboszlai crossed a free kick towards the goal, goalkeeper Gunn ran out and punched the ball away. The goalie collided with Ralston and Varga. The Hungarian remained injured and had to be treated on the field behind a screen (68th).

Reuters/Lee Smith Varga was given emergency medical treatment for several minutes before being carried off the field

The match was interrupted for several minutes before Varga was stretchered off the pitch. Varga was taken to a hospital in Stuttgart and his condition was stable, the Hungarian Football Association announced. Team manager Marco Rossi substituted Martin Adam for him and also brought on Attila Szalai for Dardai (74th). Scotland coach Steve Clarke also reacted with a double substitution: Lawrence Shankland for Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong for McGinn (76th). READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

Goal is scored in hectic final phase

Things got hectic in the final phase because both teams desperately needed three points. The Scots demanded a penalty when Armstrong fell in the penalty area during a duel with Orban (78th minute). Scotland’s team manager Clarke brought in three more fresh players, and Hungary’s coach Rossi also brought in two more players.

At the start of the ten minutes of added time, Szoboszlai failed to score from close range against Gunn (90th+1) and Csoboth (90th+2) hit the post. On the other side, a long-range shot by Callum McGregor (90th+4) was blocked, and Morgan (90th+7) and McTomany (90th+8) also failed with their shots. In the last minute, the Hungarians finally managed to score the long-awaited goal. Kevin Csoboth, who was substituted in the 86th minute, was perfectly served by Sallai with a pass into the backcourt and put the ball in the goal with a direct reception (90th+10).

Voices about the game:

Kevin Csoboth (Hungary goalscorer): “It’s hard to find words for what just happened, there are so many emotions. The main thing is that we still won, and at the last moment. I had already hit the post where I should have passed the ball and thought to myself, I have to get another chance. Thank God it came, I’m just happy that I scored this goal.”

Andy Robertson (Scotland defender): “There’s nothing to say to be honest. We gave it our all. We knew we had to win this game and they beat us on the counter. It could have gone either way but that’s football. It’s going to take a long time to recover from this. It’s devastating, all the boys are absolutely exhausted. I want to thank all the fans. I’m sorry we let you down.”

Third French victory in the 2024 Grande Boucle. Anthony Turgis won the ninth stage of the Tour de France on Sunday, a 199-kilometre loop around Troyes (Aube). At the end of a crazy stage, Slovenian Tadej Pogacar retains the yellow jersey of leader in the general classification, ahead of Belgian Evenpoel and Dane Vingegaard.

And a third victory for France. Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies) won the ninth stage of the Tour de France 2024, that of the white paths, Sunday July 9, in Troyes (Aube).

Tadej Pogacar remains in yellow at the end of a completely crazy stage marked by numerous attacks and several “explanations” between favorites.

It was in a sprint that Turgis beat his breakaway companions to beat the Briton Tom Pidcock and the Canadian Derek Gee and secure the greatest victory of his career.

“It’s incredible, it’s been a long time since I won. I’ve been thinking about a big victory for years,” he exulted, very moved.

A specialist in the classics, the 30-year-old from the Paris region, who comes from a family of cyclists, had already taken second place in Milan-San Remo. He brings his TotalEnergies team its first victory in the Grande Boucle since that of Lilian Calmejane in 2017.

It is also the third French victory in this Tour, after those of Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich Postnl) and Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) during the first two stages. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

This stage concludes, before the rest day on Monday, a great first week with also the record of victories of the Briton Mark Cavendish (Astana) (35 victory on the Tour) and the first of the Eritrean Biniam Girmay, as well as already some great battles for the yellow jersey.

After the Troyes stage, a total concentration of cycling, the general classification remains unchanged, with the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) maintaining a 33-second lead over the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Steps), 1:15 over the Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Visma) and 1:36 over Primoz Roglic (Red Bull).

But the main favourites fought like rarely on the plain, like Pogacar who attacked twice in the last 22 kilometres without however managing to take off.

Evenepoel launched a very daring attack 70 km from the finish line, followed only by Pogacar and Vingegaard.

In a rare image on the Tour, the three men, isolated from the rest of the peloton, quickly returned to the breakaway before getting back up, cooled by the prospect of being cut off from their teammates on the dangerous wine-growing paths of the Aube, riddled with traps.

The breakaway, made up of strong riders, was then able to gain ground and in the end it was Anthony Turgis who proved to be the strongest.

Lebron waives money

This does not correspond to the maximum salary: the four-time NBA champion, who will play for Team USA at the Olympic Games in Paris, is giving up almost three million dollars.
