The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu has been accused of sidelining first-term members during debates.

Cyril Hart, who represents the Bonny/Degema federal constituency of Rivers State, made this allegation during a discussion on the recent su*cide bombings in Borno State.

The motion on the Borno bombings was presented by Ahmed Jaha (APC, Borno). During the debate, Deputy Speaker Kalu permitted contributions from former Deputy Speaker Idris Wase, Chairman of the Committee on Navy Yusuf Gagdi, and Chairman of the Committee on Defence Babajimi Benson. However, despite several indications from other members wishing to speak, Kalu cited time constraints and did not allow further debate. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

As Kalu moved to put the motion to a vote, Hart raised a point of order. He accused the deputy speaker of showing bias against new members, noting that only senior members were allowed to speak on the motion. Hart claimed this has become a recurring pattern under Kalu’s presiding, where senior members are consistently given preferential treatment.

Hart said while some lawmakers on the floor cheered him;

“You don’t give preference to first-timers… you don’t. This is what you always do. You need to allow for first-timers.”

Kalu responded by saying “There is no discrimination in the parliament.”

Not satisfied with this, Mr Hart continued to speak despite his microphone being switched off by the presiding officer and stormed out of the chamber in protest.

William Ruto, the President of Kenya, has announced the country’s National Treasury will cut spending to make room for key commitments after anti-government protests.

In a live address from the state house, Ruto said the government will present a proposal to the national assembly to approve massive expenditure cuts after the withdrawal of the 2024 finance bill.

“Over the last few days, our treasury team has been assessing the adverse impact of either reducing the budget by the entire Sh346 billion or borrowing the full amount,” he stated on Friday.

“We have since struck a middle ground and will be proposing to the National Assembly a budget cut of Sh177 billion and borrow the difference. The additional borrowing will increase our fiscal deficit from 3.3 per cent to 4.6 per cent and will be used to protect the funding of critical government services,” President Ruto stated.

President Ruto listed several critical government initiatives that will receive continued funding, including the hiring of medical interns, support for dairy farmers, road infrastructure projects, fertilizer subsidies, and settlements of debts owed to farmers in various sectors. 50 per cent reduction in government advisors within the public service.

Removal of budget lines for offices of First Lady, spouses of Deputy President, and Prime Cabinet Secretary.

Suspension of non-essential travel and participation in public contributions by state and public officers.

“These measures are part of our commitment to enhance efficiency and transparency in serving the people of Kenya,” President Ruto affirmed.

“We are determined to improve the quality of services and ensure maximum value for the resources entrusted to us.”

UEFA Takes Decision On Man Utd, Man City Playing Europa, UCL Next Season

Manchester City and Manchester United have been cleared by UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body, CFCB, to take part in European competition next season.

Both City and LaLiga side Girona qualified for the Champions League.

There were doubts over whether both teams will be allowed to play in the competition, as they are both part of the City Football Group. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

United, meanwhile, earned a Europa League ticket by winning the FA Cup along with Nice. The Ligue 1 club is also under the control of Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group.

Two clubs under the same ownership being in one European competition creates a potential conflict with UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules, and changes had to be made at board level for all four clubs to be admitted.

UEFA confirmed on Friday that there had been “significant changes made to the ownership, governance, and financial support of the concerned clubs” which would “substantially restrict the investors’ influence and decision-making power”.

The shares held in Girona and Nice have been transferred to independent trustees “through a blind trust structure established under the supervision of the CFCB”.

The measure applies for the 2024/2025 season, after which the shares will transfer back to City Football Group and INEOS.
