Famous ex-cop Titus Musila alias Katitu was sentenced to 15 years for shooting dead a suspect in the busy Githurai 45 stage in 2013.

However, it is a bit of a relief for the famous cop as he was to serve less time in jail. Justice Wakiaga ruled that he served three year out of the 15 in probation and also deduct from it the four years he stayed in custody during the trial..

“Fifteen years will be adequate, 12 years should act as a warning to the police on misuse of firearm and three years to be served in probation,” the judge ruled.

His lawyer Cliff Ombeta was however not satisfied with the judgment and said they would appeal.

Wakiaga stated that the offender would spend three of the fifteen years on probation and that, as he had already served four years in jail, the remaining twelve years would be shortened by the same number.

Katitu claimed in mitigation of his murder conviction on January 7, 2018, that his actions were extremely regrettable and that he had four dependent children.His arrest provoked a three-day protest on the Thika Superhighway by residents, who demanded his immediate and unconditional release.

The officer had made several unsuccesful bail applications.

However, the court declined to release because of steep opposition from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.
