Kaishu Sano has joined the Mainz 05 team around two weeks late. Nadiem Amiri takes the initiative in training and discusses the procedures with his future teammate.

Instead of a holding six, Mainz coach Bo Henriksen can currently observe a talking six on the training pitch. New signing Kaishu Sano and midfield strategist Nadiem Amiri are eagerly exchanging information. Since Sano speaks neither English nor German, this is only possible via Sho Chikaraishi, who is interpreting and has traveled with the player. He normally coaches the second team of the Japanese club FC Basara in the A-class Mainz-Bingen.
45-minute appearance planned against Montpellier
“It was important to us that someone who knows football takes over,” explains Henriksen, and also demands of Sano: “He has to learn the most important football commands in the first few days.” In addition to Amiri, assistant coach Michael Silberbauer can also often be seen communicating with the new Mainz number six and his translator.
Sano arrived late at the 05ers’ training camp last Thursday after 16 days in custody, which ended with the case being dropped. Tomorrow, Tuesday, he is set to play for 45 minutes for the first time in an internal test match. If everything goes well, he could play more minutes in the dress rehearsal for the start of the season on Saturday in Mainz against Montpellier HSC. Successor to Barreiro
“We haven’t been able to get a clear picture of Sano’s fitness level yet,” says Henriksen. He expects important findings from the internal test match. The team will travel back to Mainz on Wednesday, after which the 23-year-old’s fitness levels will be checked again at the Wolfgang Frank Campus.
When the contract was signed on July 3, the Japanese international was put through his paces so that reference values were available. Mainz paid around 2.5 million euros in transfer fees, excluding bonuses, for Leandro Barreiro’s successor. The new number six received a contract until 2028.
In Henriksen’s opinion, “Tom Krauß, Aymen Barkok or Jae-Sung Lee” can also play alongside Sano in the double six. “We have many options and it’s about finding the best balance,” emphasises the FSV coach. But that doesn’t mean Amiri’s teammate has to hold back in attack. “Leandro is a box-to-box player, more of an eight than a six,” explains Henriksen – he expects similar qualities from his successor.
