German diver Moritz Wesemann confidently jumped into the Olympic final from the three-meter diving board on Wednesday. After a solid qualification, he improved again in the semifinals and came in a good eighth place.
Wesemann opened his six-jump program on Wednesday morning with a three-and-a-half-fold dolphin somersault. He received 66.30 points, the same score as in the qualification the day before, and after the first round of jumps he was in joint 14th place in the overall ranking. A total of 18 jumpers were in the semifinals on Wednesday, twelve of them qualified for the final.
The 22-year-old Wesemann, who is considered a great talent in German diving, jumped to the top of the semi-final field with his second jump – at least temporarily. A strong 81.60 points ensured that he was in sixth place after the end of the second round.
Wesemann convinces, two Chinese dominate
With a very solid three-and-a-half-time Auerbach, the Aachen native, who will move to the USA for sport and studies after the Olympic Games, even moved up to fourth place halfway through the competition. The two highly favored Chinese Zongyuan Wang and Siyi Xie, who later entered the final in first and second place with a total of 537.85 and 505.85 points respectively, were already comfortably leading the field. The equally strong Briton Jack Laughler (467.05 points) was the closest to being able to stand up to the Chinese duo on Wednesday, for whom anything other than winning the gold and silver medals in the final would be a debacle. Wesemann, on the other hand, made a few mistakes in his fourth jump before the most difficult jumps of his program came up in rounds five and six.
With two and a half somersaults and three twists into the final
With a very clean four-and-a-half forward somersault, Wesemann finally set the course for the final. With his sixth jump, a two-and-a-half forward somersault with three twists, Wesemann made this perfect. In combination with a difficulty of 3.9, the highest jumped on Wednesday, a solid jump earned the German a score of 76.05 points.
These ultimately contributed to Wesemann’s total score of 433.33 points. In the end, this was enough for a strong eighth place in the overall ranking and thus also a very confident entry into the final of the three-meter springboard. This will take place on Thursday afternoon from 3 p.m. (live on the sportschau.de stream) in the Paris Aquatics Centre.
