1oo9tReigning world champion, triple jumper Hugues Fabrice Zango is a big favorite for the Olympic Games. Three years after winning bronze in Tokyo, he hopes to win the first gold medal in the history of Burkina Faso. Particularly popular in his country, he combines his life as a top athlete with his job as an engineer.

“It’s a great source of pride to be the first to bring home a medal for Burkina Faso. I wanted to bring home the most beautiful metal for my country and for myself. Unfortunately, it came down to bronze.” Three years ago in Tokyo, Hugues Fabrice Zango was torn between pride and disappointment. The Burkinabe had opened the Olympic medal count for his country, but he had to settle for bronze.
In Paris, the reigning triple jump world champion does not want to miss his chance. He wants to make history once again by becoming the first Burkinabe athlete to climb to the top step of the Olympic podium. “Honestly, I believe in my chances, I believe very, very strongly in my chances given everything I have been through, the experience I have been able to acquire over the last five years,” thus confided, on the IOC website, the flag bearer of his country during the opening ceremony.

“I hope to be able to exploit my full potential precisely because this could be my last Olympics, given that I am 31 years old. For the moment, I am going to give my all here and I want to be able to exploit my potential to the maximum. I have to leave these Games without any regrets,” he added.
“Man is an animal that adapts to his conditions”
True to his nickname “Jiren”, a character from the manga “Dragon Ball” embodying calm and power, Hugues Fabrice Zango arrives in Paris in full serenity. The man symbolizes sporting and academic success. Enrolled at the University of Artois in Béthune at the same time as the Artois Athletics club, he never stopped his studies, his second driving force, until obtaining his doctorate in electrical engineering in December 2023.
His secret? “A question of method: learning to learn,” he answers simply to AFP. “He always arrived in class looking a little withdrawn, absent, but his eye was very sharp,” says his thesis director and master’s professor, Jean-Philippe Lecointe, who praises his “capacity for ultra-rapid assimilation.”
It is precisely to play on both sides that Zango arrives in Pas-de-Calais in 2016, far from all his landmarks. “Fortunately, man is an animal that adapts to his conditions…”, he sighs. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>
Food, climate, solitude… The Burkinabe discovers another world. “It was already extremely cold for me,” he explains. “My first winter was complicated. I couldn’t jump far. It was depressing to wake up at 7 a.m. when it was still dark. So I had six very, very complicated months.” Once this adaptation phase was over, Hugues Fabrice Zango built himself up in his host country, at the Artois club, where he is extremely popular. “It’s the club that gave me my chance to come, to qualify for the 2016 Olympics (…), that helped me with different papers, to obtain my visa,” he emphasizes, eternally indebted.
World record in sight
Since Tokyo, the Ouagadougou native has continued to progress. He won world gold in Budapest in 2023, to which he added the world indoor title in early March in Glasgow. He is also aiming for the triple jump world record, one of the hardest to beat in athletics, set at 18.29 m by the British Jonathan Edwards in 1995.

As the International Olympic Committee (IOC) explains, his rise was supported by an Olympic Solidarity scholarship for the Paris 2024 Games, a scheme that allowed him and other athletes to access resources and participate in training camps that they would not have been able to access otherwise.
Aware of his luck, Hugues Fabrice Zango also tries to help young athletes in his country through a foundation that he created: “I understood that I still had a certain social position and that it was also an opportunity to be able to give, to be able to help more, and that’s when I started to think about it. It’s a foundation that will help to promote sport at school level and also help to train, find partnerships to be able to train leaders, club executives, coaches.”
When he enters the competition during the qualifications, on Wednesday 7 August at the Stade de France, Hugues Fabrice Zango will be supported by an entire country and a continent: “I have been keen, since my first steps in athletics, to want to do something great, so today, I continue with this naivety of always wanting to push my limits. It is to place Africa and show the young generation that it is possible to be able to achieve performances whatever the field.”
