A breath of fresh air is blowing in North Carolina. Jeff Peterson, the new president of the Hornets, is thus drawing up his new project for Charlotte. And to supervise this team, he has brought in a man he knows well.
While Steve Clifford has migrated to the front office, Jeff Peterson has chosen Charles Lee, Joe Mazzulla’s right-hand man at the Celtics. The two individuals had already worked together at the Hawks when the first was an assistant GM, and the second was, at the time, Mike Budenholzer’s assistant.
“His tactical skills are excellent,” assure Jeff Peterson. “He’s a champion. He’s won two titles (2021 with the Bucks and 2024 with the Celtics). You know, it’s hard enough to win once, he’s a winner. And he’s an incredible teacher and communicator. He’s going to do his best to get the best out of every player. That’s one of the main reasons I picked him.”
In two seasons, the Hornets have won 48 games, just five more than the number of victories achieved in the 2021/22 season. That year, the Hornets were seen as a promising team in the Eastern Conference, capable of getting involved in the fight for the playoffs in the short term. But the club has taken a step backwards.
A project without untenable deadline
“When you put deadlines on things, you get yourself into trouble,” assure Jeff Peterson. “Because we don’t know the jump that Brandon (Miller) is going to make. We can’t anticipate the progression of Mark (Williams) and LaMelo (Ball). We don’t know what kind of season Tidjane (Salaun) is going to have.” READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>
“I think, again, any time you put a deadline on things like this, it can get you into trouble at times, just because you can overpromise and underdeliver,” the president specifies. “The only time frame we have in mind is just the day ahead of us. How can we improve today? As long as we continue to do that, I think Charles and I will be happy with the progress we make.”
Unlike the coaching staff and the front office, the Hornets have bet on continuity in the roster. They will certainly hope that Brandon Miller can play regularly alongside Mark Williams and LaMelo Ball. But they are also counting on a good integration of their 6th pick of the Draft, Tidjane Salaün.
“This guy loves going to the gym, he loves getting better and he loves the process,” says Jeff Peterson. “So, again, we can sleep knowing that he has those qualities, not to mention he has some real skills as well. He can rebound and he can play fast. He can make his shots. So we’re really excited, more than anything, about his mindset and his approach to how we’re going to move forward and build this project.”
