Training on an e-bike or a muscle bike? In reality, it doesn’t make much difference

1oo9tBetter to train on an e-bike or a muscle bike? The truth is that the electric bike and the mechanical one they are equally useful, science says.
E-bikes are no longer a novelty (here we have explained how they work and how to ride them), but rather means of transport that are now part of the daily life of many people who, perhaps due to lack of time or breath, choose to travel daily or go on an excursion with a pedal-assisted electric bike. E-bikes, moreover, are potentially also useful for professionalswhich during their preparation can regulate the speed and effort of pedaling. However, in the collective imagination the idea is still rooted that training with an e-bike is less profitable or less useful than training on a classic bicycle. However, this is a false myth debunked (also) by a new study from Brigham Young University. Let’s find out why.
E-bike and bike training: the comparison
One of the largest studies on the subject (a survey completed by 10,000 participants spread across seven European cities) was published this summer in the journal ScienceDirect: the results showed that the benefits in terms of physical activity were similar between “e-bikers” and cyclists. Recently, however, researchers at Brigham Young University decided to focus exclusively on mountain biking and not on urban cycling.
In this study, they analyzed 33 amateur cyclists, equipping them with heart rate monitors and Apple Watches to monitor their activities. The participants completed two a route of approximately 9.65 kilometers: first with an electric mountain bike set to medium intensity, then with a classic mountain bike. The route had an average difference in altitude of 216 meters and an average gradient of 5%.

Similar heartbeat
On average, it took participants 10 minutes to complete the course. 12 minutes and 40 seconds less using the e-mountain bike. Always with the electric MTB, the average speed was higher by almost 6.5 kilometers per hour compared to the use of the classic mountain bike. I heart rate levels average, however, were almost the same: 145 beats per minute for electric MTBs, 155 beats per minute for mountain bikes. Both values are indicative of intense physical activity.

Intense physical activity at the same time
From the interviews following the study it emerged, as predicted, that the participants did less effort and had more fun during their e-MTB ride. Despite this, they exercised with the same intensity as when they were using the normal mountain bike. And this means that both physical efforts brought their organism the same benefits at a muscular and cardiovascular level.
“Those who rode e-MTBs had higher heart rates, even though they were less fatigued. They also enjoyed the experience. I think this is a game-changer for those who find cycling too difficult. Our study confirms that cycling exercise can be accessible to a wider community,” said Dr. Crookston, one of the study’s authors.
