Lukman Questions Tinubu’s Administration Coastal Road Project

Published

By

Salihu Lukman

Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman, North-West, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised concerns over some infrastructural projects embarked upon by the Tinubu-led administration.

He lamented about the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project, which is expected to gulp ₦15 trillion.

The APC chieftain expressed his reservations, suggesting that the funds could have been better allocated to sectors in dire need, such as education.

Lukman criticized the approach taken by his party, the ruling APC, towards handling certain national projects and social investment programmes, describing some of the management as poor.

According to him, the massive financial commitment to the coastal road project might not align with the immediate socio-economic needs of the country, especially in enhancing human capital development in education.

The coastal road project, aimed at boosting economic activities along Nigeria’s coastline from Lagos to Calabar, has been touted by its proponents as a developmental leap.

Speaking on Channels TV, Lukman said, “Now we poorly manage it: the problem of corruption now under Asiwaju (President Bola Tinubu). So far it has been suspended because the minister (Betta Edu of the Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development) is suspended and almost everything appears to be suspended with respect to social investment. “But when you look at some of the key decisions taken by this government, one of which is the Lagos Calabar coastal highway – you look at the amount of money, we are talking of ₦15 trillion, that is going to go – you ask yourself, given the challenges facing this country, is that the right priority?

“Imagine you invest ₦15 trillion in equipping our armed forces and trying to recover all the ungoverned spaces in the country. Imagine you invest that in terms of providing classroom blocks and recruiting teachers.”

According to him, with the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria increasing, the authorities should go beyond talking and start taking action.

Lukman said, “You know, now we talk about this statistic of 10 million out-of-school children but we do nothing.

“If, for instance, we are now going to mop up the state of some of these classes, you check online, you see certainly there is anything but class classroom.

“In many of our schools, you see a school with more than 500 pupils with only one teacher.”

Speaking to reporters in Kano on Sunday, Kwankwaso expressed concerns over divisive campaigns and criticisms directed at President Tinubu by certain factions within the North, labeling these efforts as detrimental to the region’s long-term interests.

“Patriotic northern politicians must not heed the voices calling for alternative candidates from the South,” Kwankwaso stated. “If another candidate wins in 2027, the North may face an extended eight-year wait for power to return.”

Kwankwaso dismissed claims that the country’s current security challenges should dissuade support for Tinubu. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

He acknowledged the president’s ongoing efforts to address armed banditry and instability, particularly in the North.

Highlighting Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle’s recent progress in countering banditry in the North and Northwest, Kwankwaso called for unity, urging northern politicians to support Tinubu’s administration.

Addressing rumors about former Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso potentially running as a vice-presidential candidate with a Southern politician, he cautioned against endorsing such moves, arguing that it would delay power returning to the North until 2035.

He concluded by urging northerners to support Tinubu, stating, “The best assistance we can give President Tinubu is to rally around him with our prayers and efforts to achieve peace in the country.”

Southeast Senators have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to order the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a closed-door meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbem, SAN, the Senators emphasized the urgent need for Kanu’s release.

Abaribe, speaking on behalf of his colleagues after the meeting, expressed concerns over the deteriorating economic and social conditions in the Southeast, attributing it to Kanu’s continued incarceration.

Abaribe stated that Kanu’s peaceful agitation has been hijacked by criminals, leading to increased violence and loss of lives, including those of security personnel.

He said he met with Kanu at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja on Monday, where Kanu agreed to comply with any conditions set for his release.

The former Deputy Governor expressed confidence that releasing Kanu would help to restore peace and stability in the Southeast, which has been troubled since Kanu’s detention in 2021. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

The Senators urged the Attorney General to convey their request to President Tinubu and to use his influence to drop the charges against Kanu.

Abaribe noted that political leaders, religious figures, and stakeholders in the Southeast have unanimously supported Kanu’s release as a necessary step towards peace.

Kanu was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021 and brought back to Nigeria to face terrorism charges.

Despite pleading not guilty, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja denied him bail, citing his previous bail jump in which Abaribe was his surety. Kanu has remained in DSS custody since then.
