There are concerns that the conflict between the city welfare corporation and the city badminton association, which was entrusted to the private sector over the rental of Songnae Community Gymnasium in Bucheon, could spread into a movement against the private outsourcing of public sports facilities.
The presidents of 58 sports organizations under the Bucheon City Sports Council are attracting attention by launching an online signature campaign against private outsourcing, demanding that public sports facilities outsourced to the private sector be returned to athletes.
According to the Bucheon City Badminton Association, sports organizations, and social welfare corporation Lumbini on the 25th, Lumbini, a social welfare corporation in charge of privately entrusting Songnae Social Gymnasium, recently announced Songnae as the venue for the Bucheon City Badminton Association long-term badminton competition to be held from August 24 to 25. They were informed that they could not use the community gym.

Lumbini cited the fact that several complaints from nearby residents due to illegal parking and smoking occurred during the Fantastic National Badminton Tournament hosted by the Bucheon City Badminton Association on the 25th of last month.
Lumbini requested solutions several times for each event, such as placing parking attendants and securing parking lots when signing a rental contract, and received pledges. However, they were ignored and not kept, so they notified them of restrictions on use, citing the ‘Bucheon City Sports Facilities Installation and Operation Ordinance’.
In response, Song Byeong-jin, president of the Bucheon City Badminton Association, said, “Lumbini’s notice of restrictions on the use of Songnae Community Gymnasium is typical abuse of power and abuse of power,” and added, “We have never refuted Lumbini’s high-handed attitude during each competition and have consistently said, ‘I’m sorry.’ Now we can no longer stand by and ignore Lumbini’s abuse of power. He added, “Apart from the Badminton Association, the presidents of 58 sports organizations also judged Lumbini’s restriction on gym use as an abuse of power and are speaking with one voice that corresponding measures are needed.”
A Lumbini official explained, “After the use restriction notice was announced, officials from the city, the Sports Council, and the Badminton Association held a meeting to discuss strengthening parking staff, and it was decided that the competition would proceed as scheduled.”
Meanwhile, in response to the conflict between Lumbini and the Bucheon City Badminton Association over the rental of the Songnae Social Gymnasium, the presidents of 58 sports organizations under the Bucheon City Sports Association opposed the outsourcing of public sports facilities to the private sector and demanded that they be operated directly by Bucheon City.
They held an online signature campaign opposing the outsourcing of public sports facilities to the private sector and called for ‘the eradication of abuse of power and ignoring civil complaints at public sports facilities.’
