Victor Wembanyama on Politics, the NBA Draft, and Olympic Preparations

Published

on

By

Blocked by the agreements between FIBA and the NBA which prohibit American League players from starting opposition training more than 28 days before the start of a tournament, Victor Wembanyama will begin Olympic preparation with the French team at starting this Friday, June 28. Before putting on his size 55 sneakers, he sat down at Insep this Thursday to talk about politics, the draft and the Games.

What is your position for the next legislative elections?

Victor Wembanyama. Of course, political choices are personal but I think it is important to move away from extremes. I think this is not at all the direction to take for a country like ours. Even though it’s a very personal opinion, that’s how I feel.

What is your opinion on the NBA fantasy draft for French basketball?

I feel a lot of pride, enormous pride. I stayed up to follow her. My first reaction was: it’s not yet enough for French basketball! If we have made number 1s twice, we can still do it a third time and even a fourth. There will of course be less prosperous years but my desire is focused on how I can help French basketball and that starts with performance.

What advice can you give to Zaccharie Risacher?

If I had to give him just one, it would be: be yourself, don’t let the pressure get to you, don’t let it change you.

“I am excited and looking forward to sharing the field with my teammates and especially with Rudy. »

How are you approaching the Games with all the demands that await you?

I approach it like I approach the rest of things in my past and future life. Being here, preparing for and playing the Games is first and foremost a sporting pleasure and a challenge. Being part of this team is an everyday job. I have no worries about that because I know that I have more important challenges to take on on the court than those concerning extra basketball and the demands. Regarding my place in the team, I remain the same, natural, sober.

Are you nevertheless aware of the craze you are going to generate this summer?

I tend to underestimate this phenomenon. I don’t pay any more attention to it than that. I don’t watch the news about myself all the time, I don’t hang out on social media and I try to only take the positive from this situation.

Many French athletes say they want to take a photo with you. How do you react ?

It doesn’t flatter me but it makes me happy to see all these positive energies directed towards me. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

How long have you been thinking about the Olympic Games?

I have been preparing for the Games since the first time I saw them on TV, without actually remembering which edition it was. Participating in the Games was first a dream, then as I grew up and matured, it became a goal because it is the most important event in the world.

How do you plan to play with Rudy Gobert to form the pair of the two best defenders in the NBA?

It’s sure that it will bring something new. Our objectives are things that French basketball has never achieved before. Personally, I am excited and impatient to share the field with my teammates and especially with Rudy. We talk about it a lot with the staff and the players. We are on the same wavelength, we share the same synergy, the same ambitions.

“A goal is not only words but also actions and I hope to make my contribution. »

A year after the failure in the World Cup, is your goal to win something other than the gold medal?

What happened last year at the World Cup (elimination in the first round) is not something that worries me. And since I wasn’t there, it’s difficult for me to talk about it, but losing is also part of a career. What I see this year is that everyone is standing in the starting blocks, ready to set foot on the pitch, with incredible involvement and intensity. The objectives come from what I already see at the start of preparation. A goal is not only words but also actions and I hope to make my contribution.

What do you think of the American team which seems like a scarecrow?

It’s already exciting to have known all these players on the field and to have faced them. I hope now that we will have the chance to compete against them because it will be a very interesting match. When you’re a basketball player, it’s always a dream to play against Team USA and all these legends. Just in the NBA, every game against Steph (Curry) or LeBron (James) is already something special.

Will this Olympic tournament be the toughest in history?

I don’t know yet. We will only be able to draw all the conclusions after the competition.

James Dolan Criticizes NBA’s New TV Contract: A Leveling for Franchises or Unfair Redistribution?

Published

on

By

It was thought that all owners would be delighted with the new $74.6 billion TV contract negotiated by the NBA. An agreement that will further boost franchise revenues and cause player salaries to explode.

More James Dolanthe Knicks boss who has been at open war with Adam Silver and the leaders of the Major League for years, has nevertheless split from an open letter to criticize the agreement!

A leveling for franchises

Why? Because he believes that it levels things out even more for the franchises. James Dolan does not support the redistribution system put in place by the NBA during the last collective agreements, which require franchises in large markets to give a share of their revenues to franchises in small markets, so that no one loses money. As he is one of the first redistributors, the businessman is annoyed.

“The NBA has adopted the NFL model of reducing the importance and power of the local market”writes James Dolan. “Soon, your only concern for revenue will be ticket sales and next year’s jersey color. But don’t worry, because through revenue pooling, you’re guaranteed neither success nor failure. Of course, to do that, the league must break up the successful franchises and redistribute to the less successful. This new media deal goes a long way toward that goal.”

For James Dolan, the arrival of a streaming platform like Amazon is also a very bad signal, with franchises having fewer and fewer matches to reserve for their local broadcasters, making these agreements complicated.

The businessman is also annoyed by the percentage retained by the NBA, which will reach 8% (6 billion dollars) while it was only 0.5% (15 million dollars) in the current agreement… READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

New York, an exception rather than the rule?

A levy that he judges as such “without sufficient justification… or transparency about how the NBA arrived at this amount, how these costs will be allocated, or the extent to which the league will use this purported increase in revenue to incur additional costs and further increase the league’s ever-increasing level of spending…”

To summarize: James Dolan criticizes the NBA for having bet on an overall increase in its revenues, which it can then share with its franchises, while the Knicks boss believes that it is rather individually that the franchises should work, so as not to penalize the clubs which earn more money.

Of course, on the NBA side, one can retort that the “Big Apple” franchise is more of an exception than the rule, with the biggest market in the league and huge revenues ensured by the constant influx of tourists to Madison Square Garden. Furthermore, the agreements with streaming services like Amazon Prime Video or Peacock are above all a way for the NBA to compensate for the collapse of a large part of the regional TV networks, rather than a way to torpedo the few still prosperous markets (New York, Los Angeles, etc.) in the field.

The Blues, without their two players charged with aggravated rape, landed at Roissy on Monday evening.

The French XV, which left Buenos Aires on the night of Sunday to Monday at the end of a South American tour that turned into a nightmare, landed at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport on Monday at around 7:45 p.m., two hours late, noted an AFP journalist on board the Blues’ plane.

The French, dressed in their official blue uniforms, travelled on board an Air France commercial flight which also included the Argentine athletes on their way to the Paris Olympics, which begin on July 26, according to AFP.

Some of them took a direct connecting flight to return home, like Toulon scrum-half Baptiste Serin, who was named captain of the French XV for this tour. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

Two players are missing

The plane took off from Buenos Aires on Sunday evening with a little over two hours of delay at the end of one of the worst weeks in the history of French rugby, which saw two young players from the team, Pau second row Hugo Auradou (20 years old, 1 cap) and La Rochelle third row Oscar Jegou (21 years old, 1 cap), charged on Friday with aggravated rape by the Argentine justice system.

The two players are accused of raping a woman on the night of July 6-7 in a hotel in Mendoza, in the northwest of Argentina, where the French XV had just played the first match of its tour.

Auradou and Jegou, who talk about sexual relations “consented” according to their main Argentine lawyer, have been placed in detention. The examination of their request for placement under house arrest should take “at least ten days”the Mendoza prosecutor’s office said on Friday.

A few hours before the first revelations about this alleged rape, another player from the French XV, Toulon full-back Melvyn Jaminet (25 years old, 20 caps), had been removed from the group after making racist remarks in a video published on July 7, which he said he was “ashamed”.

The sporting record of the South American tour of the Blues, far in the background, is two victories – on July 6 against Argentina (28-13) then on July 10 in Uruguay (43-28) – and a defeat against the Pumas (33-25) on Saturday.

Tennis professional Maximilian Marterer has reached the second round of the tournament at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum. For Daniel Altmaier, Rudolf Molleker and Henri Squire, however, the clay court event is already over. Top seed Alexander Zverev is not due to serve for the first time until Wednesday.

Marterer won the traditional event with prize money of 1.892 million US dollars on Monday evening after a tough fight with 6:4, 6:7 (6:8), 7:5 against the South Korean Kwon Soon Woo. The world number 108 from Nuremberg will now face the Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, who beat his compatriot Francisco Comesana 7:5, 6:4.

Altmaier (Kempen) and Molleker (Oranienburg) failed to overcome their opening hurdles. Altmaier was defeated by the Italian Flavio Cobolli 4:6, 7:6 (8:6), 3:6, Molleker lost to Alexander Schewtschenko (Kazakhstan) 4:6, 6:4, 4:6. Henri Squire (Duisburg), who had received a wildcard for the tournament, had to cancel his match against the number four seed Cerundolo on Monday afternoon due to illness.

Zverev opening match postponed to Wednesday

Contrary to initial plans, local hero Alexander Zverev will only start his mission to defend his title on Wednesday against qualifier Jesper de Jong (Netherlands) – assuming he can actually play after straining his knee. The Olympic champion was actually supposed to play his opening match on Tuesday. However, he asked for the match to be postponed because of his injury. “We have granted his wish to play a day later. Zverev definitely wants to compete in his home tournament,” explained tournament director Enric Molina.

On Monday, the Hamburg native appeared in good spirits during training in his home town with a brace on his left knee, but apparently free of pain. He hit balls over the net with Frenchman Arthur Fils for almost two hours.

Further information

He is “hopeful that I can play in my home country. But I have to see how my body reacts,” said the Olympic tennis champion on NDR. more READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>
