BREAKING: Reform FRSC, NAFDAC, FCCPC, SON, Others Having Overlapping Mandate, CPPE Tells Tinubu

The Chief Executive Officer, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), Muda Yusuf, on Sunday urged President Bola Tinubu to reform agencies with overlapping mandates. He said this in a statement released to THE WHISTLER. Yusuf commended the recent removal of Value Added Tax and excise duty on pharmaceutical raw materials, intermediate products, medical diagnostic equipment and machinery.

He added that it would also revitalize the nation’s pharmaceutical industries and create more jobs.

The CPPE boss further stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s scrapping of its Price Verification System Portal which was a needless duplication of the functions of the Nigeria Customs Service, and a product of a dysfunctional foreign exchange regime was necessary as it will save funds for more robust initiative.

He said, “We urge the CBN to sustain its engagement with the private sector for quality, evidence-based feedback on monetary policy outcomes.

“In the meantime, we should identify other overlapping regulatory functions which had continued to constitute impediments to domestic and foreign investments. The impact varies across sectors.

“Some of these regulatory overlaps exist concerning the following institutions: Federal Ministry of Environment, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency [NESREA], State environmental protection agencies, local government environmental units, and state waste management agencies. “There are also overlapping functions concerning the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, Weights and Measures Department, and Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission [FCCPC].

“These are some of the numerous regulatory institutions with overlapping mandates. They are sources of avoidable distractions and significant financial burden to investors”.

He also noted that the reforms should not be limited to the food and health regulatory sectors as the logistics sector was a nightmare for most investors.

“There are numerous regulatory and institutional irritations from a multitude of agencies of state and non-state actors creating logistics nightmare for investors,’ he added.

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Kano State, Ilyasu Musa Kwankwaso has urged northern leaders and politicians to rally behind President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Speaking to reporters in Kano on Sunday, Kwankwaso expressed concerns over divisive campaigns and criticisms directed at President Tinubu by certain factions within the North, labeling these efforts as detrimental to the region’s long-term interests.

“Patriotic northern politicians must not heed the voices calling for alternative candidates from the South,” Kwankwaso stated. “If another candidate wins in 2027, the North may face an extended eight-year wait for power to return.”

He acknowledged the president’s ongoing efforts to address armed banditry and instability, particularly in the North.

Highlighting Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle’s recent progress in countering banditry in the North and Northwest, Kwankwaso called for unity, urging northern politicians to support Tinubu’s administration.

Addressing rumors about former Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso potentially running as a vice-presidential candidate with a Southern politician, he cautioned against endorsing such moves, arguing that it would delay power returning to the North until 2035.

He concluded by urging northerners to support Tinubu, stating, “The best assistance we can give President Tinubu is to rally around him with our prayers and efforts to achieve peace in the country.”

Southeast Senators have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to order the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a closed-door meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbem, SAN, the Senators emphasized the urgent need for Kanu’s release.

Abaribe, speaking on behalf of his colleagues after the meeting, expressed concerns over the deteriorating economic and social conditions in the Southeast, attributing it to Kanu’s continued incarceration.

Abaribe stated that Kanu’s peaceful agitation has been hijacked by criminals, leading to increased violence and loss of lives, including those of security personnel.

He said he met with Kanu at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja on Monday, where Kanu agreed to comply with any conditions set for his release.

The Senators urged the Attorney General to convey their request to President Tinubu and to use his influence to drop the charges against Kanu.

Abaribe noted that political leaders, religious figures, and stakeholders in the Southeast have unanimously supported Kanu’s release as a necessary step towards peace.

Kanu was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021 and brought back to Nigeria to face terrorism charges.

Despite pleading not guilty, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja denied him bail, citing his previous bail jump in which Abaribe was his surety. Kanu has remained in DSS custody since then.
