Pogacar wins the first battle with Vingegaard and regains the yellow jersey

MADRID, 2 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) won the fourth stage of the 111th edition of the Tour de France, contested over 139.6 kilometres between Pinerolo and Valloire, and sent a message to his main rival, the Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), whom he beat by more than forty-five seconds, after regaining the yellow leader’s jersey.

The stage was a fast-paced one from the start, with a very high-level breakaway leading the race up to the slopes of the Galibier colossus, which ended the adventure of the Spaniard Oier Lazkano (Movistar), the strongest of a breakaway that included Tour stage winners such as Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan Team) and Warren Barguil (DSM).

The breakaway also included top riders such as climber David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) and this year’s winner of the Fleche Wallonne, Stephen Williams (Israel Premier Pro Tech). Before starting the climb to the hardest mountain of the day, the recent Spanish runner-up on the road tried his luck with an attack that his fellow adventurers were unable to follow.

However, the UAE’s powerful and demanding work throughout the stage ended up neutralising the breakaway. The pace set by Marc Soler, together with the earlier efforts of Tim Wellens, Pavel Sivakov and Adam Yates, caused havoc in a peloton from which the leader of the general classification, the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (EF-EasyPost), was soon left behind, and with 25 kilometres to go, he was no longer part of the group.

The Spaniard Enric Mas (Movistar) was also unable to hold on among the favourites, losing more than four minutes, as was the British Simon Yates (AlUla Jayco Team), his compatriot and winner of the Tour in 2018, Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), the Russian Aleksandr Vlasov from Bora Hansgrohe, or the American from Visma, Matteo Jorgenson, who practically said goodbye to their chances in the general classification after the first major climb.

The chosen bunch included the Slovenian Pogacar, escorted by his teammates Juan Ayuso and Joao Almeida, who led the group and made Jonas Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic (Bora Hansgrohe), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal QuickStep), Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers) and Mikel Landa (Soudal QuickStep) suffer, who kept in the wake of the UAE.

With one kilometre to go to the summit of the Galibier, the winner in 2020 and 2021 dealt a blow to his rivals and left them all behind, including Vingegaard, who saw himself gradually moving away from him until he reached the summit with a 10-second lead with 20 kilometres to go.

On the winding descent, the Slovenian maintained his lead and did not let his rivals catch him. Carlos Rodríguez launched himself down with force and completed a spectacular descent in which he came into contact with Vingegaard before the final flat section, in which both were caught by Remco Evenepoel, Ayuso and Roglic.

On the flat, Pogacar’s lead continued to grow until it reached 35 seconds, with Remco Evenepoel crossing the finish line in second place, ahead of Juan Ayuso and Roglic. Two seconds behind were the Dane Vingegaard and the other Spaniard Carlos Rodríguez.

With this powerful victory, the UAE rider regains the lead in the general classification, and achieves a margin of 45 seconds over the second, the Belgian Evenepoel, and 50 over his main rival, the Dane Vingegaard. The first Spaniard is Juan Ayuso, fourth at 1:10 behind his teammate, while Carlos Rodríguez is sixth at 1:16, and Mikel Landa occupies seventh place at 1:32 behind Pogacar.

This Wednesday the peloton faces the fifth stage, between Saint-Jean de Maurienne and Saint Vulbas, over 177.4 kilometres, with two fourth-category climbs along the route, but which will likely be decided in a sprint in what will be the second opportunity for the sprinters in this Tour.

Dutch Badminton Association Faces Turbulent Times: Duinwijck Withdraws from Eredivisie

Published

By

Elvira Denteneer, chairwoman of the 28-time national champion from Haarlem, explains the remarkable decision. “We no longer have confidence that the current competition format will lead to a qualitatively better and attractive premier league that should be the showpiece of the association. We have made several proposals. For two years now, a working group in which we also participate has been trying in vain to achieve a quality boost,” says Denteneer.

“This spring, our two coaches from team 1 wrote an open letter to the other clubs and players’ council with concrete proposals that would make it possible for the best Dutch players to also be seen in the Dutch competition. The letter is now in a drawer and the association is continuing to polder. Real improvements and changes are not being realised,” according to the chairman.

“At the end of last year, the association undermined their own competition by deliberately planning qualification matches for the European Championship for national teams in Sportcentrum Papendal at the same time as an important competition round in the Eredivisie. All top clubs suffered from this and were expected to hand over their top players to team NL while the competition had to be completed with B-players. The association did not want to postpone our match against Dropshot, while the association had claimed six of our players to play for the European Championship for national teams. A total mismatch with one of the objectives of the working group.”

Investment plan

Badminton Netherlands is in any case in a turbulent situation now that NOC*NSF recently advised the association at the start of a new Olympic cycle when distributing the available resources for the top sports programs not to submit a new investment plan. The performance managers of the national sports association underestimate the chance of medals at the World Championships and Olympic Games. In Paris, only the mixed doubles Selena Piek/Robin Tabeling will participate, while there are five game events. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

If the additional funding is indeed stopped, this will have major consequences for the Papendal courses, national selections and the careers of individual athletes.

No party on home soil for Germany. Spain knocked the host out of their own European Championship after a thrilling duel. At the end of regular time, Wirtz had initially avoided an exit, but a late Spanish goal plunged Germany into mourning. Substitute Mikel Merino crowned himself the unexpected hero at La Roja.

    Highlights Spain – Germany

Spain – Germany in a nutshell

  • Man of the match

Dani Olmo came on for the injured Pedri and did not disappoint at all. Just after half-time he opened the score on a pass from Yamal and was also decisive in the end. With penalties in sight, Olmo also served Merino for the goal of the qualification.

  • Key moment

You can’t get much closer to penalties. For two periods of extra time, the two teams went all out for the win, but Mikel Merino did what Füllkrug couldn’t: head it in. Great jump and header from the substitute.

  • Statistics

We got the two most attractive teams in this quarter final, but they also showed that they could be tough. Over 120 minutes we got 16 yellow cards and one red.

  • Remarkable

Toni Kroos led the line in the duels. After three minutes he went way too hard on Pedri, who had to go off injured a few minutes later. The passes, but also the tackles at Kroos, who we can now call retired.

  • With such names and such matches in recent weeks, we expected some sparkling football. An advanced final, it was. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

It turned out to be a bit more tension than was good for the match. Toni Kroos had to win, and he already knocked Pedri over after a few minutes. Exit Pedri, in Dani.

Luis de la Fuente was grateful for that match against Albania, in which Dani Olmo had already shown what he could do. Before half-time, the lines were too closed and too strong to do much football and so we had to make do with pinpricks.

Both keepers were in action, but never had to produce the wonder saves. Neuer made his goal small for Nico Williams and pushed away an Olmo shot well, Unai Simon easily saved a header from Havertz.

    Dani in Florian

So rest, Germany wanted to get more control of the match with substitutes Wirtz and Andrich.

The opposite happened, with the elusive Yamal in a leading role. With a first would-be assist, Morata still did too little, the second Olmo took over nicely in one go.

Nagelsmann felt the storm coming and made further substitutions. With more dominant play and many chances, it was only until the end that the liberating goal was achieved.

Füllkrug did his best to force the equalizer, but could not get past the post. His powers as a super sub are not that great.

Florian Wirtz had been there longer and did better after the Germans had started pumping. On a pass from Mittelstädt and Kimmich he hit the post, but on the right side. Extra time in Stuttgart.

During the tense extra time, the teams left gaps to attack, but without any major clear-cut chances.

There was some controversy about the penalty, with Cucurella unintentionally stopping a shot from Musiala with his hand. Anthony Taylor and the VAR did not award it, others would have done so. Food for discussion.

Füllkrug missed another big chance to become an even bigger hero and had to watch Mikel Merino finish on the other side. A good cross from Olmo, a powerful jump and header from Merino. Spain to the semi-finals, Toni Kroos and Germany to the exit.

    Step by step

    End

Kroos throws the very last chance in front of goal, but Simon plucks it and goes down. The signal for Anthony Taylor to blow the whistle! Spain goes through to the semi-finals and had to get past a very creditable and pleasant Germany. Mikel Merino is the savior of the fatherland, on a pass from Olmo.

Carvajal – who was already suspended – receives his second yellow card

Carvajal, who was already suspended for the semi-final, will happily hang on Musiala’s neck. The wonder boy was gone, vintage Carvajal.

Dani Olmo, the standout player for Spain, has cramps, but is in no hurry to get back on his feet. Of course.

There will be 3 minutes of added time.

No, it’s not going to be Niclas Füllkrug’s day. In a fantastically undulating final phase, he’s allowed to head alone, from close range. But somehow ‘die Lücke’ heads just wide.

    Füllkrug misses last chance header!

Olapola, it’s a shooting gallery in the German box. Everyone gets a go, but the ball doesn’t even reach Simon.

So farewell to the Germans? They get three more minutes from Taylor.

    Mikel Merino!

No, we’re not going to penalties! Dani Olmo throws the ball well in front of goal, from his left flank, and Mikel Merino heads the ball nicely into the net. Beautiful jump from the Real Sociedad man.

There isn’t really any football played anymore.

    Eddy Demarez

2-1 to Spain! Merino heads in Olmo’s cross

Füllkrug extends Kimmich’s cross, Simon is alert

Füllkrug can’t get his head against it! Fantastic cross from Kimmich, who even without the touch of the German needs his save. It’s not meant to be for Füllkrug today.

Nacho writhes in pain, but is just a first-class seamstress. He actually lets Wirtz, who is already yellow, run into his back.
