Ronaldo’s tears after missing a penalty against Slovenia – the stories about it never stop. Now his sisters have provided an idea as to what made him so emotional in the round of 16. Elma and Katia Aveiro revealed in their stories on Instagram why he could no longer hold back his tears when he was denied a penalty by the outstanding goalkeeper Jan Oblak in the 105th minute of extra time.

The sisters wrote, accompanied by a video of Ronaldo crying uncontrollably: “It was the moment when he saw our mother suffering for a whole life on the giant screen in the stadium. Do you know what that means? You don’t know. No one will ever know. It’s not just about football, fame and money.”

The background to this somewhat cryptic explanation could be the reference to his problematic childhood. Ronaldo’s family had a difficult life before he became a footballer. The family was poor, his father was an alcoholic. Ronaldo once said that Dinis Aveiro, who died in 2005 at the age of 51, was drunk almost every day and that he “never really got to know him. We never had a serious conversation.” The children often waited in front of a bakery in the evenings to get free pastries.

The superstar cried not only on the pitch after the round of 16, but also during an interview with Portuguese broadcaster Sport TV. “Even the strongest sometimes have their bad days. I was depressed, sad. I’ll talk about it later, I can’t take it anymore,” admitted the 39-year-old.

Hamann takes Ronaldo to task

Dietmar Hamann did not let himself get carried away emotionally. He is an expert for the Irish broadcaster RTE at this European Championship, where he took issue with Ronaldo and his tears. He played “120 minutes, missed a penalty. I believed all the talk about ‘Ronaldo has become a team player because he needs the team more than before.’ I really believed that nonsense. But I think he showed his true colors again that evening.”

Ronaldo fails from the penalty spot and breaks into tears – The scene in the video

Pure drama! Cristiano Ronaldo misses a penalty in the 105th minute of the European Championship round of 16 match against Slovenia. The Portuguese captain bursts into tears and is consoled by his teammates. Watch the scene here in the video.

Hamann accused Ronaldo of having selfish motives. “I think to myself: ‘It’s all about you’. There is a squad of 26 players, 20 people on the staff, 30,000 or 40,000 fans, it’s not about you. Instead, you try to cheer each other on.” He supported Slovenia “because I found the reaction embarrassing and inappropriate,” said Hamann. He had never seen anything like Ronaldo’s emotional breakdown “because as soon as you show emotions, as soon as you get emotional, you lose your calm. That was the point at which the coach should have said: ‘You have to go out because you are not in the right condition to carry on playing’.”

Basketball star Franz Wagner has officially extended his contract with NBA club Orlando Magic and becomes one of the highest-paid German athletes in history.

Lebron waives money

This does not correspond to the maximum salary: the four-time NBA champion, who will play for Team USA at the Olympic Games in Paris, is giving up almost three million dollars.

This way, the Lakers save on luxury tax because they do not exceed the salary cap. In addition, the superstar has secured a clause that he can only be traded with his consent.

Carlos Alcaraz has reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, but had to play for almost three hours in his 6:3, 6:4, 1:6, 7:5 match against the aggressive Frenchman Ugo Humbert. Jannik Sinner won in three sets against Ben Shelton.

Alcaraz thrilled the audience on Centre Court on Sunday (07.07.2024) with his enthusiasm for the game and his usual fast legs, but a loss of tension in the third set cost the defending champion a clear victory.

Humbert then played well and sensed his chance for a surprise. But Alcaraz found his way back on track in the fourth round, and in the end the French Open champion continued his winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments to eleven matches in a row and can still hope for another victory at Church Road.
