Angelique Kerber ended a disastrous grass-court season with a first-round exit at Wimbledon. She has not yet given a clear answer as to whether she will return to London as a participant. Her next goal is clear.

Angelique Kerber sat there with shining eyes and left the question of her future open. Shortly after her sobering first-round exit at Wimbledon, the 36-year-old was confronted with the approaching end of her career and answered neither yes nor no as to whether this was her last Wimbledon appearance.

“I don’t know. I didn’t come here with that in mind,” said the former world number one, as she was still digesting the low point of her beloved but this time dismal grass season. Kerber neither clearly said ‘Yes, it was my last match on the sacred grass’ nor ‘No, I want to be back in 2025’. After the match, it was perhaps too early to ask such a question.

Kerber would have liked to extend her Wimbledon appearance, as her training partner at Church Road, Jule Niemeier, managed to do. The Dortmund player impressively withstood the rain chaos and moved into the second round late with a surprisingly clear 6:2, 6:1 win against the Swiss Viktorija Golubic.

Her opening match was actually scheduled for Tuesday, like Kerber’s match, but was postponed due to the rain that kept coming. On Wednesday, the start of the match was then postponed by a total of two hours and the match was briefly interrupted. In 2022, Niemeier wrote her own Wimbledon success story by reaching the quarterfinals.

“My Tournament”

Kerber, the 2018 tournament winner, spoke emotionally about her Wimbledon story. “When I look at Wimbledon, it feels like my tournament,” said Kerber. “I’m always happy to come here. I still have the best moments in my mind, and that will stay that way regardless of the match.”

Half a year after the end of her maternity leave, the grass season was supposed to be a highlight for her. But she hasn’t won a single one of her three matches on the green surface. If you add in the early French Open exit, she has suffered four first-round defeats in a row. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

Kerber has already experienced several ups and downs

Despite the defeats, she is not losing her sense of fun, the three-time Grand Slam tournament winner made clear. “I’m already hardened to that,” said the Kiel native, referring to the many ups and downs that have accompanied her tennis career for a long time. In fact, Kerber has already proven several times that she can come back strong after setbacks.

Defeats don’t hurt her quite as much anymore since she became a mother to little Liana. Kerber has said this several times. But it was clear that she doesn’t care about the results at all when she threw herself down on the table in front of her with her arms and put her Wimbledon ID card down next to her. She looked dejected.

It remains to be seen whether the match against Kazakhstani Yulia Putintseva will be the last chapter in her glorious Wimbledon history, with her triumph in 2018 and the final in 2016. At the moment she lacks security, self-confidence and match practice. Kerber is still waiting for a win after the third Grand Slam tournament of the year.

If the former world number one retires at some point, the gap in German women’s tennis could become even more obvious. For years, it has been a topic that the next generation is missing and the situation is worrying.

Kerber goes on medal hunt in Paris

In addition to Niemeier (24), of the six German women in singles, only Laura Siegemund made it to the second round. Like Kerber, the Swabian is 36 years old. On Thursday, she faces a major challenge in the grass court classic against the 2022 Wimbledon champion, Jelena Rybakina from Kazakhstan.

Kerber and Siegemund are planning to compete in the doubles at the Olympic Games. The Summer Games in Paris are Kerber’s next big goal. She will have to get used to the less popular clay court by the end of July. The US Open in New York at the end of August will then offer the last chance to not end the year without a victory at Grand Slam level.

Alcaraz battles through to next round with five-set win, Sinner dominates at Wimbledon

Published

By

Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 3) has reached the next round in Wimbledon with more fight and tension than expected. The 21-year-old Spaniard had to go five sets against his opponent Frances Tiafoe (ATP 29) – he ultimately won in 3 hours and 50 minutes with 5:7, 6:2, 4:6, 7:6 (7:2), 6:2. On Centre Court, with the roof closed, Alcaraz showed a disappointing performance at times and had to make up a set deficit twice.

Tiafoe, on the other hand, was able to read Alcaraz’s hard serves very well and took the first set thanks to a late break to make it 6:5. The 26-year-old American then clearly lost the second set, but continued undeterred. After winning the third set, Tiafoe had the Spaniard on the verge of a bitter disappointment in the fourth set. But Alcaraz made short work of him in the tiebreak.

This was also the case in the fifth and final set, which was the quickest at around 34 minutes. Alcaraz broke Tiafoe early to make it 2-1 and 4-1 and finally won after almost four hours. This means that his second triumph at Wimbledon is still possible. A year ago, Alcaraz impressed with his final victory over the Serbian record Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic.

Sinner doesn’t show any weakness

Much less trouble with declared world number 1 Jannik Sinner with his opponent in the 3rd round. The Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (ATP 58) could not hold a candle to the reigning Australian Open champion and lost in three sets with 1:6, 4:6, 2:6.

Sinner had won all of the first five games, and winning the first set was then just a formality. In the second set he earned two break points, and he used the second to break his serve to make it 5:4. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

The Italian started the third set with a perfect break. He followed it up with another to make it 4:1. After just 1:38 hours of play, he earned his first match point, which he was able to use to advance to the round of 16.

Rain disrupts program

Alcaraz and Sinner’s two opponents in the round of 16 are not yet known. Due to the bad weather conditions, numerous games, some of which had already started, had to be postponed until Saturday.

Justin Steele allowed just two singles in a complete game Friday, helping the Chicago Cubs to a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Steele was an All-Star last year, going 16-5 with a 3.06 ERA.

He earned his first win of the campaign on Friday (in his 13th start), also achieving his first complete game in his career.

The left-hander improved his record to 1-3 and his ERA to 2.95.

Steele struck out seven batters and walked two.

Seiya Suzuki hit a two-run homer in the first inning, his fourth home run in nine games.

Miles Mastrobuoni was outstanding at third base in the first, third and eighth innings. On the very first pitch of the game, he set the tone by diving to his right to catch a line drive from Taylor Ward.

He also hit his second double of the season.

The Cubs won their second straight game, following a stretch in which they were beaten eight times in 10 outings.

The Angels dropped a fifth straight game after winning six in a row.

Griffin Canning (3-9) allowed four runs and six hits in four 1-third innings.

The End of an Era: France Knocks Out Portugal in Epic Euro Quarterfinals

Published

A loooong evening – with announcement!

For the fourth time, France and Portugal will meet in a knockout match at a European Championship, and for the fourth time, it will require at least extra time.

In the end, the French won 5:3 on penalties and made it to the semi-finals – Portugal’s dream of winning the title in Hamburg was shattered. Unlucky Joao Felix hit the post with Portugal’s third shot.

Mbappé on, Ronaldo out!

It is the generational duel of superstars: Kylian Mbappé (25) against Cristiano Ronaldo (39) – the five-time world footballer and the great childhood idol of the 14-year-younger Frenchman.

There used to be posters of him in his room, but now Mbappé sometimes gets advice from Ronaldo. The Frenchman revealed this before the game: “He always helps me. He asks what’s going on in my life and he gives me tips. He will always be a football legend, considering what he has done for football. It’s an honour to know him.”

Now Mbappé’s French are sending Ronaldo into European Championship retirement. His 212th international match for Portugal will be his last at a European Championship. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

The superstars’ common problem at the European Championship: the tournament is not going well for them personally! Ronaldo only scored in the two penalty shootouts against Slovenia and now France, Mbappé scored once against Poland from a penalty. The quarter-finals continued to be just as disappointing for both captains…

The first half is very heavy football fare, completely devoid of highlights. The superstars in attack don’t have a single shot on goal.

Things get strange in the second half: referee Michael Oliver loses his yellow card while sprinting, and when he returns it, Portugal’s Vitinha jokingly shows him the card. Things get painful for Mbappé, as he gets a header from Silva on the mask he wears because of his broken nose.

Then the game finally picks up speed. First, France goalkeeper Maignan makes strong saves against Fernandes and Vitinha, then Kolo Muani and Camavinga miss two huge chances on the other side. The game goes into extra time goalless, with Ronaldo’s only top chance going way wide. BILD scores 5 for CR7!

For Mbappé, the game is over after just 105 minutes, and Barcola comes in for him. Unlike Ronaldo, however, Mbappé now has at least one more chance to become a hero.
