BWF “An Se-young, the best player in the past few seasons”
The candidates for the championship are Chen Weifei, Tai Tzu-ying, Marin, and Akane.

[서울=뉴시스] Reporter Park Gwang-on = Ahn Se-young (22, Samsung Life), who is aiming for the women’s singles gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is considered a strong candidate to win. However, the road is not as smooth as hoped. This is because her opponents are trying to block Ahn Se-young’s ‘golden’ shuttlecock.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF), the international body that governs badminton, posted an article titled ‘Form Guide: Women’s Singles Leaders’ on the 23rd, before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, introducing the ‘candidates to block Ahn Se-young’s victory.’
“Will it be one of the ‘Big Four’ or a former champion keen to reclaim the crown after missing out on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games?” the BWF wrote. “We take a look at the fate of five standout women’s singles contenders this season.”

Strong contender for the championship ‘Ahn Se-young’… “I couldn’t stop her until she got injured”
In particular, BWF was the first to introduce An Se-young as the leading contender for the title.
The BWF said of An Se-Young: “The Korean has been the most outstanding women’s singles player over the past few seasons. An Se-Young, who won 10 titles from 13 finals last year, was almost unstoppable before a right knee injury slowed her down.”
He continued, “Nevertheless, Ahn Se-young kept fighting and won three titles out of four finals this season, including the French Open.”
In fact, Ahn Se-young has been on a tear recently. After being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the women’s singles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Ahn Se-young won three international competitions in November and December 2021.
Last March, when she participated in the Badminton All England Open, she won the women’s singles gold medal for the first time in 27 years, and in July, she surpassed Akane Yamaguchi (Japan) to become world number one.
Then, in August of the same year, he became the first Korean singles player to win the World Individual Championships, and also took first place at the Hangzhou Asian Games held in September.
An Se-young won the BWF Singapore Open held in June and also took a silver medal at the Indonesia Open.

‘Fated Rival’ Cheon Wei-fei
BWF first mentioned An Se-young’s ‘destined rival’ Chen Yufei (26, China) as the biggest competitor, who is considered a strong candidate to win.
World No. 2 Chen Weifei is the one responsible for An Se-young’s return to Korea in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In particular, he is the defending champion who won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
“After winning at the Tokyo Olympics, Chen Yufei struggled to stay motivated but found her hunger again last year,” the BWF said. “In particular, she is one of the few players who can beat An Se-yeong.”
An Se-young is behind Cheon Wi-fei in the overall record with 8 wins and 12 losses. However, except for the 7 consecutive losses at the beginning, she has the upper hand.

“An Se-young, not as good as before” Tai Chu-ying who had been criticized
BWF also mentioned Tai Tzu-ying (30, Taiwan), ranked 3rd in the world, as a potential rival to An Se-young.
“The Taiwanese wizard maintained his form early in the season, finishing runner-up in Malaysia before winning the India Open,” the BWF said. “However, a knee injury sustained ahead of the Olympics forced him to miss several tournaments.”
Last December, Tai Tzu-ying had underestimated An Se-young, saying she was not as good as she used to be. However, after losing to An Se-young in the semifinals of the French Open women’s singles in March, he changed his response, saying, “An Se-young is very difficult to play against.”

2016 Rio Olympics Gold Medalist, Carolina Marin
BWF also evaluated Carolina Marin (31, Spain), the gold medalist at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and this year’s All England Open winner, as a player who can stop Ahn Se-young from winning the championship.
“Few can match Marin in sheer mental strength,” the BWF said. “The Spaniard, who won gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, was unable to successfully defend her title at Tokyo 2020, but has bounced back strongly after two knee surgeries.”
“Marin, who won the All England, Swiss and European Championships in succession this season, has promised to reach even greater heights in Paris,” the report added.
However, Marin is behind in the head-to-head record with Ahn Se-young, with 4 wins and 6 losses. Marin’s last win over Ahn Se-young was in the semifinals of the Thailand Open in January 2021. Since then, Marin has lost five straight matches to Ahn Se-young up until the World Championship finals in July last year.

Akane Yamaguchi, the ‘world’s number one’ until the very end
BWF has finally mentioned world number 5 Akane Yamaguchi (Japan) as a candidate to stop An Se-young’s gold hunt.
“Akane, a two-time world champion, had an injury-plagued season but produced some breathtaking matches,” the BWF said.
He continued: “He has played in back-to-back finals in France and England, and his semi-final win over An Se-young at the All England showed that both players are willing to push themselves to the limit.”
In particular, Akane is the player who held the top spot until just before An Se-young took the world number one ranking in July of last year. He is also ahead in the head-to-head record against An Se-young with 13 wins and 10 losses, and is also dominating against Chen Weifei with 21 wins and 11 losses.
However, Akane, who has been on a downward trend since July of last year, has recently fallen behind with 2 wins and 4 losses in the last 6 matches. This year, she has split 1 win and 1 loss in the last 2 matches.
