The incident unfolded just after 11 pm in Fayetteville, North Carolina, when police officers observed Smith’s 2006 Chevrolet Impala running a stop sign at the 2000 block of Karina Street. Acting on their duty to enforce traffic laws, the officers activated their lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop.

However, Desiree Smith had other plans. Instead of pulling over and accepting a traffic citation, she brandished a firearm and opened fire at one of the officers, attempting to take his life.
