Kevin Gausman pitched his third complete game in 280 major league starts. Daulton Varsho drove in four runs and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Texas Rangers 7-3 on Saturday.
Limiting the opponent to four hits, Gausman (9-8) won his third consecutive start.
He joined Max Fried of the Atlanta Braves as the only pitchers with two complete games this season. On June 8, he had one against the Athletics in Oakland.
This time, he struck out eight batters and threw 118 pitches, his most since 2016.
“He was just extremely effective,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “He looked like a Cy Young candidate.”
“His repertoire is No. 1,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy added. “He had a good quickness and a good change of speed, plus he was accurate.”
Varsho hit a three-run homer and a sacrifice fly.
Marcus Semien tripled in the first inning and led off a wild pitch. Wyatt Langford had an RBI double in the third and scored on a single by Adolis Garcia, but the Rangers lost their second straight game after a five-game winning streak.
Vladimir Guerrero had three of the Jays’ 15 hits and scored three runs.
Alejandro Kirk had three hits and drove in a run for Toronto, which won two straight games for the first time since July 10-11 in San Francisco.
In a rare start at third base, Guerrero dove on a Semien grounder in the eighth inning and threw to first in time for the out.
In the ninth, Gausman threw up his arms after George Springer made a diving catch in right field to score Garcia for the second out.
“They’re the reason I was able to throw this long today,” Gausman said of Guerrero and Springer.
Michael Lorenzen (5-6) was ejected after allowing four runs and five hits in just two-thirds of an inning.
José Berrios (8-8) will start the Blue Jays in the third and final game of this series on Sunday. Jon Gray (5-4) will start the game on the mound for the Rangers.
Manny Machado reaches 1,000 RBI plateau
Back in Baltimore, the Padres’ Manny Machado hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning against the Orioles on Saturday to reach the 1,000-rBI plateau.
He had three hits in San Diego’s 9-4 victory, helping extend the Padres’ winning streak to seven.
“I’m happy to be here, where it all started. I produced my first and my 1,000th point here,” Machado said.
The third baseman began his career in Baltimore in 2012, playing with the Orioles until he was traded in 2018.
Since then, he has played in the National League, which means that he has not returned there often. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>
“The stadium has changed since Manny left,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said.
The left field fence is much higher and much further away than before.
Machado’s throw traveled 413 feet, beyond right-center field.
The Padres are 31-22 on the road and 26-28 at home. On the current trip, they won two of three games in Cleveland against division leaders and then swept Washington. Dylan Cease had a no-hitter Thursday at Nationals Park.
The Padres are now one win away from sweeping the Orioles, who lead the AL East.
“We’ve been playing some really good baseball lately,” Machado said. “It has nothing to do with being away or at home.”
