Canada’s 3×3 Basketball Team Secures Spot in Semifinals with Thrilling Victory Over Australia

Team Canada will have another chance to make history as the Canadian women are assured a medal chance in 3×3 basketball.

In Canada’s first appearance at the Games in the sport that made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, the Canadians earned a spot in the semifinals after beating Australia in the repechage round, 21-11.

The deciding basket came from shooting specialist Paige Crozon, whose two-pointer from the wing sealed the win for Canada with 2:24 left.

“It’s been such an up-and-down journey for us,” Kacie Bosch said. “All the games are so tough…we’ve had some really tough, close games, but our team never gives up.”

Canada, after two overtime losses Friday against the United States and Spain, had to beat Azerbaijan earlier in the day to guarantee a spot in the repechage.

Azerbaijan gave it their all against Canada. In a back-and-forth game, neither team saw the lead grow beyond two points until a Crozon basket made it 17-14 for Canada with 2:33 remaining.

Michelle Plouffe then hit a two-pointer from the top of the key with 1:27 remaining to bring Canada within one possession of victory, but Azerbaijan wouldn’t give up.

Two baskets by Tiffany Hayes tied the game at 19 with 46 seconds remaining.

That’s when Michelle Plouffe, the number one ranked player on the 3×3 basketball circuit, took matters into her own hands, scoring the game-winning basket with 15 seconds remaining.

Hayes had one last chance for victory, but it didn’t work out.

In the repechage, the Canadians faced Australia, the team they had won their first Olympics against earlier in the week. The two teams finished with identical records of four wins and three losses, but Canada was a tough matchup for the Australians because of their size.

However, it was Bosch, the smallest player on the court, who led the team in scoring in what was her best game of the tournament. Bosch had struggled to find her range throughout the group stage, but she hit two important two-pointers to extend the lead to 11-4.

“My team always has faith in me even when I don’t have faith in myself,” said Bosch, who shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the field. “I knew they believed in me and I just didn’t think about it, I just let it go.”

Canada’s defensive intensity and offensive discipline showed how badly they wanted to secure a spot in the semi-finals, forcing Australia into 10 turnovers and shooting 30.4 per cent.

No play better illustrated Canada’s heart than Bosch, who took an elbow from Anneli Maley and began bleeding from a cut above his eye.

Maley was called for an offensive foul, and Bosch returned to the game as soon as she was treated by medical staff.

At that point, Canada had complete control of the game, and a two-point shot from Crozon sealed the victory.

“It’s such an emotional win, I think going after something with all your heart makes you so vulnerable,” Crozon said. “We had such an up-and-down tournament, so to make it to the quarterfinals… it just made me so proud of our team and our effort.”

Canada will face Spain in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. EST / 5:30 p.m. local time on Monday. The two teams played an overtime game the last time they met, so Monday’s semifinal promises to be an exciting one.
