Leyla Durmus lost her 21-year-old son Kaya after he died from an opioid overdose in 2016.
Kaya is buried at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Leyla visits his grave every day and is on a mission to spread awareness about opioid addiction.
One day while visiting her son’s grave site, Leyla noticed a flyer for a social gathering being held on the cemetery grounds. It would be hosting a showing of Raiders of the Lost Ark on a Saturday night, where guests would enjoy the famed Indiana Jones film on an open field away from the grave sites, but in view of people’s resting places.
Leyla was outraged. The concerned mother found it totally inappropriate for the cemetery to host a fun movie night on the grounds. She called the event “disgusting” and “very disrespectful to me as a grieving mother.”
