The court heard evidence of events that unfolded on that fateful Sunday, May 28, 2023. While the victim’s mother was in the kitchen preparing coffee, her father returned home and found his fourteen-year-old daughter resting in her parents’ (his) bedroom. What followed was an unconscionable breach of parental trust as he sexually assaulted the child, later attempting to silence her through threats.

Through heartbreaking testimony, the court learned that the victim had endured abuse since she was twelve years old. Her silence was finally broken, not for herself but for her younger sister. The catalyst came when she overheard her father making inappropriate sexual requests to her younger sibling. Fearing for her sister’s safety, she found the courage to confide in her mother about her own prolonged ordeal.

The mother’s immediate report to authorities set powerful mechanisms in motion. The Mokopane Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) took charge of the case, with Investigating Officer Sergeant Ramolokoana Leshaba leading the investigation. Within days, specifically by Wednesday, May 31, 2023, the perpetrator was in custody, where he remained throughout the trial as bail was successfully opposed.
