The Future of Klay Thompson: Rumors and Speculation as Free Agency Looms

Published

Golden State Warriors He still aspires to compete highly next season after missing the Playoffs this year, but the composition of his team seems to be very different from that of recent campaigns.

The future of Klay Thompson is up in the air, as the four-time NBA champion hits Free Agency and Thompson himself has been pretty clear that at least plans to test the market waters after 13 years with the Warriors.

Thompson has spent only a few hours of his 13-year career as a free agent. His only foray into the Agency came in 2019, weeks after he injured his knee during the NBA Finals, but Golden State quickly brought him back to a five-year deal.

As that contract expires, the outlook for both Thompson and the Warriors is much different than it was five years ago. Does that mean a divorce is looming?

Where will Klay Thompson play: the latest rumors

Sunday June 30

Klay will talk to four teams

All signs point to Thompson leaving Golden State and according to Adrian Wojnarowski, he will have talks with four franchises in these hours: Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers.

Warriors prepare to lose Klay in free agency

Golden State is set to lose Klay Thompson in free agency this summer, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Charania said that the two sides “They have had almost no communication since the negotiation period for free agents opened almost two weeks ago and no offer has been made”.

Warriors prioritize Paul George over Klay Thompson

Marc Stein has reported that the Warriors are focused on acquiring Paul George rather than re-signing Thompson.

“Golden State has prioritized the search for Paul George over any other matter this week”Stein said.

This could mark the end of the Splash Brothers era in Golden State if Thompson decides to leave via free agency. He has been linked to several teams, including the Dallas Mavericks.

76ers and Nuggets also interested in Thompson

The 76ers and the Nuggets are two teams that would be interested in Thompson if he leaves the Warriors, as reported by The Athletic. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

Philadelphia tried to bolster its shooting by adding Buddy Hield at the 2024 trade deadline, but Hield struggled mightily with the 76ers and is set to become a free agent. Thompson, while not as consistent from deep as he once was, could fill the same shooting role for the Sixers.

The Nuggets could be looking to replace free agent Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, as it likely wouldn’t be financially possible to retain Caldwell-Pope while also adding Thompson.

The Mavericks could look to Thompson after firing Tim Hardaway Jr.

The Mavericks are exploring the “feasibility” of signing Thompson in free agency, according to Marc Stein.

Dallas opened up some financial flexibility by trading away Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Pistons on Friday, which could be a step toward pursuing Thompson.

The Mavericks rebuilt their frontcourt last year, drafting Dereck Lively II and trading for PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford, but they still seemed to be missing a true shooter during the Finals. Thompson wouldn’t be forced into a primary offensive role given the presence of both Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in Dallas, but the Mavericks could see him as the missing piece as they try to stay in the title hunt.

Stein later reported that there is mutual interest between Thompson and the Mavericks.

“Amid a growing belief across the league that Thompson’s relationship with the Golden State Warriors is unrecoverable, expect strong mutual interest between Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks when free agency opens on Sunday night.”Stein reported.
