Berlin referee Felix Zwayer (43) is facing the biggest game of his life!
The DFB referee is facing the biggest game of his career. In Dortmund (!) he will referee the duel between England and Holland (Wednesday, 9 p.m./ARD, Magenta and here in the BILD live ticker).
But there is already sharp criticism of the scheduling!

Referee expert Manuel Gräfe (50) rants on X (formerly Twitter): “Irresponsible towards everyone.” And: “Just a demonstration of power externally+internally (we decide) – regardless of performance/past. Madness.”
Gräfe is already considered a critic of Zwayer and does not consider the Berliner to be a top referee. But there is another reason why the former top referee Gräfe is so outraged.
Even the joy of England star Jude Bellingham (21) about the referee appointment for the European Championship semi-final is likely to be limited.

After the game, Bellingham indirectly accused Zwayer of bribery. Bellingham said at the time: “You give the most important game in Germany to a referee who has previously manipulated matches. What do you expect?” Zwayer was banned for six months in 2005 as part of the Hoyzer scandal after he failed to report Robert Hoyzer’s manipulation.
Zwayer, who had to take a break of several weeks after the game due to hostility, defended himself and called Bellingham’s statements “defamatory and disrespectful”. Zwayer has not refereed any more BVB games since then.
The English international was then even reported to the public prosecutor’s office in Dortmund by referee observer Marco Haase. The DFB sentenced Bellingham to a fine of 40,000 euros.
However, Zwayer’s appointment also means that he will most likely not referee the final in his hometown of Berlin. The semi-final will be his fourth appearance at the European Championship finals.

What’s interesting is that in the semi-finals, Zwayer will referee the Dutch for the second time (after the 3-0 win in the round of 16 against Romania). Before that, he was in charge of the group matches between Italy and Albania (2-1) and Turkey and Portugal (0-3).
The semi-final against England will be Zwayer’s fourth European Championship game. For Gräfe – and presumably also Bellingham – this is an incomprehensible scheduling.
