Gov Alex Otti of Abia State has directed the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Nwobilor Ananaba, to evaluate and restore the deteriorated structures and facilities at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp located in Umunnato, Bende Local Government Area.

This directive was issued following a meeting with Gladys Adama, the state’s NYSC Coordinator.

The governor expressed his disappointment with the current state of the camp and urged the commissioner to work closely with the NYSC coordinator to improve the camp’s conditions, ensuring a safe and suitable environment.

Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s dedication to prioritizing the well-being of the people, including the corps members serving in the state.

On her part, Adama highlighted various issues with the camp’s facilities, such as cracked walls, leaking roofs, a fallen perimeter fence, and the poor condition of the football pitch.

The Abia State government’s move comes weeks after the Federal Government announced its plan to comprehensively review, restructure, and reform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to meet future demands.

“Permit me to inform us very briefly on what is to come regarding NYSC reforms. I’m pleased to announce that I will be inaugurating a team to undertake the review, restructuring and reforms of the NYSC. The first of these reforms will be centred on reviewing participants with an entrepreneurship mindset and making skills development a core of the programme.

“We envision a future where the NYSC programmes are not only self-sustained but also a revenue-generating programme within the next five years. To achieve this, we will institutionalise the NYSC ventures as an investment and asset management outfit.

“Furthermore, as part of the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund programme for 2024, I’m also pleased to announce that at least 5000 corps members will have their entrepreneurial ventures funded with up to N10 million passing out,” he said.

During his address, the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Yushau’ Ahmed, welcomed the heads of institutions that produce corps members.

He stated that the meeting was held to improve the mobilisation process of prospective members.

Ahmed said the meeting aims to develop strategies for eliminating flaws and streamlining the mobilisation process and is a follow-up to a previous meeting with heads of corps-producing institutions in West African countries.

Speaking to reporters in Kano on Sunday, Kwankwaso expressed concerns over divisive campaigns and criticisms directed at President Tinubu by certain factions within the North, labeling these efforts as detrimental to the region’s long-term interests.

“Patriotic northern politicians must not heed the voices calling for alternative candidates from the South,” Kwankwaso stated. “If another candidate wins in 2027, the North may face an extended eight-year wait for power to return.”

Kwankwaso dismissed claims that the country’s current security challenges should dissuade support for Tinubu. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

He acknowledged the president’s ongoing efforts to address armed banditry and instability, particularly in the North.

Highlighting Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle’s recent progress in countering banditry in the North and Northwest, Kwankwaso called for unity, urging northern politicians to support Tinubu’s administration.

Addressing rumors about former Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso potentially running as a vice-presidential candidate with a Southern politician, he cautioned against endorsing such moves, arguing that it would delay power returning to the North until 2035.

He concluded by urging northerners to support Tinubu, stating, “The best assistance we can give President Tinubu is to rally around him with our prayers and efforts to achieve peace in the country.”

Southeast Senators have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to order the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a closed-door meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbem, SAN, the Senators emphasized the urgent need for Kanu’s release.

Abaribe, speaking on behalf of his colleagues after the meeting, expressed concerns over the deteriorating economic and social conditions in the Southeast, attributing it to Kanu’s continued incarceration.

Abaribe stated that Kanu’s peaceful agitation has been hijacked by criminals, leading to increased violence and loss of lives, including those of security personnel.

He said he met with Kanu at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja on Monday, where Kanu agreed to comply with any conditions set for his release.

The former Deputy Governor expressed confidence that releasing Kanu would help to restore peace and stability in the Southeast, which has been troubled since Kanu’s detention in 2021. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

The Senators urged the Attorney General to convey their request to President Tinubu and to use his influence to drop the charges against Kanu.

Abaribe noted that political leaders, religious figures, and stakeholders in the Southeast have unanimously supported Kanu’s release as a necessary step towards peace.

Kanu was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021 and brought back to Nigeria to face terrorism charges.

Despite pleading not guilty, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja denied him bail, citing his previous bail jump in which Abaribe was his surety. Kanu has remained in DSS custody since then.
