Upon arrival, the was declared dead by paramedics after showing no signs of life and a case of murder and child negligence was opened by the South African Police Service. A manhunt for the mother was launched and she was arrested shortly after.

Ferrell is being held in the Stark County Jail on a charge of cruelty to companion animals, a fifth-degree felony.

She graduated from Canton McKinley High School in 2015 and has a lengthy criminal history, with previous charges including cocaine possession, receiving stolen property and endangering children.

‘The suspect in this case is not a Haitian immigrant,’ Canton police spokesperson Dennis Garren said. ‘She is a lifelong Canton resident.’

Her bond has been set at $100,000 and she is due to face a competency hearing in front of Stark County Common Pleas Judge Frank G. Forchione on October 15.
