At the foot of the Hungarian corner, Dominik Szoboszlai and his teammates lingered for a long time to celebrate this victory snatched in the final seconds of the match against Scotland (1-0), Sunday evening, with an air of tribute and relief. The hope of qualifying for the round of 16 of the competition was reawakened with these 3 points which, however, might not be enough. But the main thing was elsewhere and it was symbolized above all by this jersey brandished in front of the stand and bearing the number 19 of Barnabas Varga.
In the 69th minute, the 29-year-old striker collapsed after a free kick from his captain, Szoboszlai, on which he was hit in the head by the elbow of Angus Gunn, the Scottish goalkeeper. Hungarian defender Endre Botka immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation, urging the trainers to rush onto the field as Varga was placed in a safety position. Concern was visible on everyone’s faces and even exasperation when Szoboszlai, furious at the slowness of the stretcher bearers, sprinted in their direction to grab one of the handles of the stretcher and transport it as quickly as possible to the six meters where his teammate was lying.
Other officials then stretched opaque sheets around the player to hide him from television cameras. Images which recalled those of another Euro, three years ago, when Christian Eriksen collapsed alone in the middle of a match against Finland (0-1), victim of a cardiac arrest.
He could speak when he arrived at the hospital
Varga was taken to Stuttgart hospital for tests and to spend the night but he could speak and appeared to remember his accident. The Ferencvaros center forward had “several facial bones” broken and “suffered a concussion” said the Hungarian Federation. “He’s fine,” Botka assured after the match. “He has to undergo a small operation but he is in a stable condition,” explained striker Roland Sallai. Marco Rossi, the coach, also spoke about the fear experienced by his players when they saw their colleague on the ground: “Barnabas was unconscious, his teammates were worried about him and because the doctors took a long time to come, probably because they did not realize his condition. Now he is out of danger. He has a fracture here (points to the orbital floor under the left eye). He will have surgery and will no longer be able to play with us in this Euro. »
His teammates therefore did not forget him when celebrating this victory which seemed impossible as the match was closed before his evacuation from the stadium, to the worried applause of the entire public. And it’s as if they had suddenly transcended themselves in a breathtaking end to the match where Kevin Csoboth, Ujpest striker, scored at the end of added time. “After this incident we fought for him, we wanted to win for him and we succeeded,” Sallai conceded. We dedicate this victory to him. »
