Pablo Ibar’s alibi
His wife’s story is devastating. He tells us that when he met him he was just a young guy, “the kind of person everyone wants to be with” although “they were also young guys trying to make money doing stupid things, maybe selling drugs, but nothing that was terrible.”
Tanya says that On the night the events occurred, Pablo was with her: “The night of the murders my mother had traveled out of town to accompany my sister to her graduation, Pablo was someone she had been seeing and that night he came to my house.” Her cousin was there too but she had just gone to sleep: “she discreetly brought him to my house so we could spend some time together.”
Pablo Ibar was accused after being detained along with some colleagues in other circumstances days later. At that time, someone believed that he looked very similar to the person captured on security cameras and his alibi was useless.
In the first trial, Tanya thought she could start her life with Pablo at home but that was not the case. The jury found him guilty and sentenced him to the death penalty: “My feeling at that moment… I can’t remember what I felt, I preferred to forget it because it was very difficult,” said Tanya.

Once again, he was found guilty by the jury, although in this case he was sentenced to life imprisonment: “It was devastating, it’s like they took your breath away,” said Tanya, who added that the hardest thing was that the next day a member of the jury called the court “to say that he had made the wrong decision. Not only that, that the had taken because he and other people had been harassed. Is this what our judicial system is like? So you lose all hope, how is Pablo going to believe that he will have the chance to return home?
