Gerrit Cole allowed four home runs, including two to Mark Vientos, and the New York Mets defeated the New York Yankees 9-7 in this first game of a short two-game series between the two New York rivals.
The Yankees ace allowed six runs in just four innings of work. Cole (0-1) became the first pitcher in Yankees history to allow four home runs without hitting a single strikeout.
In two starts since returning from a lengthy stint on the injured list, the 33-year-old right-hander has a 9.00 ERA. He has allowed eight runs in eight innings on the mound.
Brandon Nimmo and Harrison Bader hit the Mets’ other two homers in the win. Nimmo finished with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Aaron Judge made things interesting in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, a two-out, two-out count, Judge hit Reed Garrett’s shot over the fence to put the Yankees up four runs in one swing.
In addition to the seventh grand slam of his career, Judge hit a productive double to amass five RBIs in the game. His 75 since the start of the season are a high in the Majors.
In a game where the ball traveled a lot at Citi Field, Juan Soto also hit a home run, his 19th of the season.
After allowing Judge the grand slam in the eighth, Garrett retired the Yankees in order in the ninth inning to confirm the Mets victory.
