Heated duel – Turkey’s last-minute victory in video
Turkey wins its last group match and moves into the round of 16 of the European Championship. The Czech Republic receives an early red card, but still has hope until injury time. Then the Turks seal the deal. The highlights in the video.
An own goal, late goals, injured players and unfortunate referee decisions – things went really badly for the Czech Republic at this European Championship. Even against Turkey, the round of 16 was within reach despite being outnumbered. The captain is accordingly proud.
It started off very badly for the young Czech team. In the first game of this European Football Championship, they were leading 1-0 against Portugal and had the favorites well under control, before Robin Hranac scored an own goal and Portugal’s Francisco Conceicao even snatched the one point from the Czechs in injury time.
After a bad start, the Czechs again missed out on a deserved win in the second game, wasting numerous chances against Georgia – and although they didn’t lose the game in the 1:1 draw, they did lose their top scorer and only star. Patrik Schick suffered a calf injury that prevented him from playing in the decisive game against Turkey.
Czech Republic’s winning goal does not count
Not the only absence for the last group match. After less than 20 minutes, his replacement Antonin Barak was also missing – and he could not be replaced. The striker was shown a yellow-red card after his second foul. A harsh but justifiable decision. The only difference was that the penalty was not applied a little later when the Turk Kenan Yildiz hit him. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>
“The consequence would be to show yellow-red in this situation too,” said former FIFA referee Lutz Wagner on ARD. “We get two yellow cards, and on the other hand there is nothing for an elbow in the face,” Tomas Soucek also said angrily: “This is the third time in this tournament that we have received something like this.”

The captain still managed to equalise despite being outnumbered (66th minute). The fact that the Turks’ 1-0 goal came about after goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek was injured and was unable to save Hakan Calhanoglu’s shot was fitting for the Czech tragedy.

After the 1:1, the team was still close to winning, which would have meant a place in the round of 16. But a goal by Jan Kuchta was disallowed. Striker foul instead of goal? Also debatable. Instead, the Turks scored 1:2 in the last second of injury time.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t start well and we’re very disappointed,” said Soucek, referring to the sending off: “Yes, we’re disappointed, but we gave it our all and will now prepare for our next tasks after the European Championships. I’m proud of my team.”
