A Swede to officiate France-Belgium. UEFA announced on Friday that Glenn Nyberg, 35, will officiate the Euro round of 16 between Les Bleus and Les Diables Rouges on Monday (6pm). The official has already been at the centre of the pitch during two group matches of this European Championship: Romania’s big win over Ukraine (3-0) and the success (1-0) of an already qualified and revamped Spain over Albania on Monday.

The “young” referee is experiencing his first major competition in Germany and will experience his first qualifying encounter at this level during this remake of the 2018 World Cup semi-final. This is not the first time that Glenn Nyberg is named for a match for Didier Deschamps’ men. In November 2021, he was on the pitch at the Parc des Princes during the French team’s demonstration against Kazakhstan (8-0), a success which qualified the Blues for the 2022 World Cup.

More recently, the Swedish official was appointed by UEFA to referee PSG’s final group match in the Champions League this season. A draw in Dortmund (1-1) in December 2023 which sent Kylian Mbappé and his partners to the round of 16 of the competition.

At the whistle of a Champions League quarter-final

Glenn Nyberg has taken charge of five Champions League games this season, including Bayern Munich’s spectacular 4-3 win over Manchester United in September and the 2-2 draw between the Bavarians and Arsenal in the quarter-final first leg. The Gunners had unsuccessfully claimed a penalty after Manuel Neuer interfered with Bukayo Saka. READ FULL STORY HERE>>>CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING>>>

The Swede explained in 2021, in an interview given to the manufacturer of referee equipment Spintsohaving been inspired by his father, an assistant referee in Sweden and for Fifa. He is the only main referee for his country, whose national team is absent, while his assistants, Mahbod Beigi and Andreas Söderqvist accompany him along the touchline.

It should be noted that a French referee, François Letexier, has also been appointed for the round of 16. He will officiate the match between Spain and Georgia on Sunday evening (9 p.m.).

Madison Keys Forced to Retire Due to Injury at Wimbledon, Jasmine Paolini Advances to Quarter-Finals

Published

A little drama unfolded on Court 1 at Wimbledon this Sunday. Madison Keys, in tears, had to resign herself to abandoning against Jasmine Paolini while she had narrowly escaped victory a few minutes earlier, leading 5-2 double break before injuring her left thigh and having to give up continuing this spectacular and emotional fight. The American, who had just conceded an ace, preferred to leave it there after 2 hours and 23 minutes of play, losing 6-3, 6-7(6), 5-5 (15-A) and letting her opponent slip away to her first quarter-final at Wimbledon. She will face another American, Coco Gauff or Emma Navarro.

The Roland-Garros finalist came within two points of victory in the deciding game of a second set that was already full of twists and turns, as she came back from 5-1, 40-15 down before losing on the wire. We thought we had settled the score. But that was without her extraordinary fighting spirit. And without the bad luck that struck Madison, of course. At 5-4, the latter left the court for a long medical timeout during which she had her left adductor strapped. But we quickly saw upon her return, when she could barely walk and push off on her legs, that it would be complicated. She tried to close on her serve but, once it was lost on a double fault, it was a lost cause.

A stroke of luck for the Italian but she fully deserves the good fortune that is currently accompanying her. She who had never won a match on grass before this year therefore follows a semi-final in Eastbourne with a first quarter-final here. She is the fifth Italian to reach the “big 8” in London after Laura Golarsa (1989), Silvia Farina Elia (2003), Francesca Schiavone (2009) and Camila Giorgi (2018).
